The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

Apparently the August dates in France and Italy.
I know Talk Talk and New Order did Denmark at the end of August. I did do one in France that year, I'm bloody sure of it...so so long ago!!

Found it. Paris. Earlier in the year. So I didn't see them.

As stated in the August 27 '86 issue of Smash Hits magazine:

As the concert draws nearer, rumours begin circulating that the support group, Eyeless in Gaza, have got lost in France so there’s a possibility that their place will be taken by the “famous” Blah Brothers – actually two of Depeche Mode’s road crew called Daryl and Nobby who (much to the group’s amusement) fancy their chances at mega-stardom. Eventually it’s decided that this is ver Blahs’ “night” and on they go to bombard the audience with their tinny Casio rock. Unfortunately they sound like a weedy version of Blancmange, with every song having the same drumbeat and squealing saxophone (not to mention a singer who sounds like he’s got a ton of cement lodged at the back of his throat). Eyeless in Gaza, who were only told about the concert yesterday and have driven all the way from Nuneaton (UK), arrive 15 minutes later, looking very fed up.

Rimini gig...

Eyeless In Gaza was the support act.

Right before this gig, rain dropped onto the band's equipment. Martyn Bates from Eyeless In Gaza told Simon Spence for his DM biography: "Martin [Gore] was laughing, saying: I'm not going on. Dave was the one determined to go on in the rain, like he would have gone on even if he'd got electrocuted."

A best of ?! That’s cheeky.

never heard of the band, no idea what to expect - but will listen a lot this week.
A best of is definitely cheeky. But if @KnaresboroughBlue thinks it’s a good representation of the band, then fair enough. There are no hard and fast rules here other than it’s generally accessible to people, so why not?

Sorry I missed your post. They toured with Depeche Mode in the 80s. Maybe that's who you mean?
They played in Italy when I was there one summer — that’s it, DM. Thanks! I don’t remember it very well obviously; I must have been out of my skull drunk or high.

Edit - ha I see you found it! I don’t remember the rain at all.

Me and a family friend took a day off from sightseeing to go and I remember my Dad was irritated.

I tend not to comment or score albums I don't know or like. Always felt these guys had something to them but I could never quite get it or get into it. And I like some weird shit so this should not have been a problem. Tried them over several years and several releases but still not taken. Hope this opens more people to broaden their horizons but can still on give this a 4. Sorry...

The best picks should be ones that challenge the norm of bands that have been heard hundreds of times. Hopefully it won't end up at the bottom and may surprise a few.
IMO the best picks CAN “challenge the norm” but not “should.” They needn’t challenge anything. Great pop can be great without being groundbreaking.

I think this is going to be an interesting listen, I had a quick flick through a few tracks whilst researching the clues.
