The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

I'm tempted to nominate an album by her when it's my turn, but most of us would know the albums already. She's an absolute genius and I rank her above Dylan in her ability to write music and lyrics. She's an astounding musician.
Whatever it is, I look forward to your next nomination.

Yet you’ll label a whole genre as anti-music, not that I necessarily disagree with you regarding Rap.
Well, no, I actually do disagree with you. My young lad listens to rap and although it’s not my taste, he has educated me enough to discern the difference between utter shite and good for the genre.

But I take the point you are making all the same. One man’s 2 in here is another’s 10.

I don’t think I’ve given as low as a 2 in here and it would really have to be utter shite for me to do so.

Musically I won’t be going as low as that with this album, but I find others dragging previous contributions into the present debate as justification for their stance as equally as distasteful. We are all wearing our hearts on our sleeves by entering a review and we have all gotten feedback that we may find harsh, but you just accept that it’s not everyone’s taste and move on.

New album, new discussion.
I understand all your arguments, but I'm just saying I would never say that any music is utter shite. It's kind of like saying "this music you love is utter shite" it's not a very kind thing to say to someone.

My comment about Rap being antimusic is valid, it's not an insult it's an actual thing. It's defined as "Any form of music that defies convention to such a degree that some people would not recognise it as musical"

Rap does defy convention. And many millions of people would say it is non musical...So to me it is antimusic. (that's not an insult) I like some Rap, Dr Dre mainly.
Free form Jazz is also antimusic, it doesn't conform to what we would recognise as music.

I disagreed with Rob earlier, LC is not antimusic as it has distinct melody, verses, chorus etc.

When I saw another Cohen album, my heart sank as I didn't like the first album we had on this thread.

Anyway, I put it on and the first track surprised me. I was expecting more of the same - downbeat, unhappy and limited guitar playing. However, I liked the first track and it reminded me maybe of something the Velvet Underground would do. And so it continued - I quite liked the next song and the next. Pretty soon, the album ended and whilst I wasn't overwhelmed, it made me realise that maybe I should give Cohen another go. And I will.

I guess this album isn't his best work, but maybe for me it's a listenable introduction that maybe will allow me to get more into him. I'm not sure if it was @Bill Walker who nominated him first, but I'll definitely give Cohen another try. I appreciate that he's lauded as a lyrical genius and I do like to give artists who are well regarded a good try.

So, how do I score this album? It's one I can listen to again and I will based on his reputation. Do I think it's a classic? No. Is it Cohen's best work? Probably not. Do I quite like it? Yes, a bit. Will I listen to it again.... maybe. Will I listen to Cohen again after listening to this? Yes!

I'll give it a 6 only because it encourages me to go back to his work :)
Nobody has nominated LC yet - it came up on the Randomizer on BH's Top 1100 thread.
I actually thought that album was OK, but not this one.

Just to be clear, I listed the reasons why I believe this LC album is anti-music. I would never say something was sh***, but I'm quite happy to break down the reasons why, for me, this is a terrible album. I'm clearly not on my own in this belief, but it's good that others are getting something out of it.

I'm not sure everbody will have heard it all. I only a few JM albums and they don't get huge plays (not much does these days) so I'd be more than happy to have to give one a good listen.

I'm still debating what to offer up if I get the call to review again. The leading candidate at the moment would be familair to some but the fates are pushing it forward.

Of course you'll get the call to review/nominate again.

But, round #3 will be a special "restricted" round :)

Ha ha, no. It was something that @BlueHammer85 suggested to help revive the other thread.
For round #3. I'll be asking people to select from the Top 1100.

We have two more nominators for this round:-

12th April @GoatersLeftShin (*** runs for two weeks, due to Easter holidays ***)
26th April @Coatigan

Anybody else fancy a go before we finish Round #2? @southamptonblue ? @Onholiday(somemightsay) ?
What will that revive? There is some right old tosh in that top 1100.

I'm confident there's enough variety in there. The point is that for 10, 15 or 20 weeks, we'll be getting reviews/scores for both threads.
Kind of changes the whole purpose of this thread though which was to review albums that meant something to us in the hope that others would also find something they liked. From the comments, that largely has been successful. Now you are setting criteria for which albums you would like us to choose. I can tell you now that the shortlist of three or four I had lined up for next round are not on that top 1100 list.
