When I saw another Cohen album, my heart sank as I didn't like the first album we had on this thread.
Anyway, I put it on and the first track surprised me. I was expecting more of the same - downbeat, unhappy and limited guitar playing. However, I liked the first track and it reminded me maybe of something the Velvet Underground would do. And so it continued - I quite liked the next song and the next. Pretty soon, the album ended and whilst I wasn't overwhelmed, it made me realise that maybe I should give Cohen another go. And I will.
I guess this album isn't his best work, but maybe for me it's a listenable introduction that maybe will allow me to get more into him. I'm not sure if it was
@Bill Walker who nominated him first, but I'll definitely give Cohen another try. I appreciate that he's lauded as a lyrical genius and I do like to give artists who are well regarded a good try.
So, how do I score this album? It's one I can listen to again and I will based on his reputation. Do I think it's a classic? No. Is it Cohen's best work? Probably not. Do I quite like it? Yes, a bit. Will I listen to it again.... maybe. Will I listen to Cohen again after listening to this? Yes!
I'll give it a 6 only because it encourages me to go back to his work :)
