The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

After declaring my love for their first offering I had high hopes for this second release. I own it on vinyl so obviously it must be good. Right?

Wrong.

Let's Go starts the whole thing on the right foot, a lovely tune, Since I held You is also rather nice, a good mix of guitar and harmony blending well. It's All I Can Do is also pleasing. A nice catchy chorus. And then...it all goes to pot. The keyboards sound like they have been shoehorned in, to every song. The B side is especially grating. Poor lyrics, songs sounding the same...it's annoying. Take Dangerous Type. Starts off nicely and then...some weird Casio vl tone kicks in and completely ruins the whole song. Lust for Kicks is the same.

The first album shows how using keyboards can be integrated into a song. The second album shows how not to do it.

Score?

4/10 just for the first three songs. The rest are fillers of the worst kind.

Hmmmm. My attempt to offer up something catchy and accessible appears to be falling relatively flat with some of the long-time reviewers. :)

Maybe when it's my turn round again, I'll have to go to the other extreme.

Throbbing Gristle's "20 Jazz Funk Greats", anyone?
Sorry. New Wave really isn’t my thing. I enjoyed the rockier tracks and I’m sure some higher scores are incoming based on some of the previous comments.

It was good to hear it again, just to confirm how much I liked their first album.

Ha ha -- it's totally fine. It definitely has a good-sized cheese factor and feels a little dated, almost a tad disco-y, and experiments sonically some (for its time). Maybe that's why I like it. Again, I am staying away from albums on the Top 1,100 (which includes the first record, but, curiously enough, no other Cars records) so there are probably always going to be quirks/imperfections that slightly (or significantly) dent broader popularity regardless of which record I pick.

Didn't disappoint me Fog excellent choice once again but perhaps I am biased as I mentioned (LOL).

No seriously this album and the Cars in general are one band every music lover needs to check out.

Plus it is only a bit fun,not to be taken seriously.
Got my selection picked for my turn.
It is going to really piss of some as I think it is a classic and their will be some who detest it.

Great pick once again.

Really never knew much about The Cars. But definitely see some resemblance with Talking Heads.

Whilst I’m more of a rock melody man - I do enjoy a fix of new wave/power pop every now and then

Let’s go - the most sounding ‘Pop hit’ on here - she says… I like the nightlife baby!… let’s go’ - solid pop track

Dangerous type - Best song, like vibe all the way through , good guitar solo and outro

It’s all I can do - little Beatles vibe here, catchy, nice enough but nothing special

Double life - another catchy number

Night Spots - this is a pure mix of Bowie and Talking Heads - upbeat tempo ,great track.

A bit light and too much synth for me but overall a very solid 7/10 from me.
