The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

I have a little 10cc story.
When I was 21 I played in a covers band around Cheshire. Usually clubs and some pubs. Anyway we did one particular gig at Bredbury Hall in Stockport.
Now at this time I was told by quite a lot of people that I quite strongly resembled Eric Stewart of 10cc, he was the one who sang I'm Not In Love. I was even asked for an autograph once in Kendalls !

So we were setting up on stage at this place and this guy wanders over and says "I love your song Rubber Bullets" (as it happened we did play that song in our set). Anyway he is convinced I am Eric Stewart and we are 10cc :)
He wouldn't have it that we wern't 10cc. He kept going on about how much he loved "our" songs !
I kept telling him we weren't.

I still remember him and wonder if he still thinks he saw 10cc that night :)
Maybe he posts on here and has just reviewed the album!
Good story Bill.

‘Rubber Bullets’ might sneak on to a ‘Guilty Pleasures’ playlist but the rest is pretty dire. They always sounded better with Bell, Lee and Sumerbee on vocals ;-)

I’ve not much new to add to what I mainly agree with from Foggy, Rob, Bill and Knaresborough.
They’ve all made very true observations that resonate with me.
I get strong Beach Boys vibrations (see what I did there) from much of this album, with much else, even Zappa light at times. Now that’s some mixture, but the punch from this is nowhere near where Zappa goes in reality.

Individually I can take any of these songs. Even the closer has grown on me as a lovely easy ballad. But collectively as an album it’s too much.

Whoever said they think they are more of a singles band, hit the nail on the head for me. I would gladly put a playlist together of several from this album and their other well known gems, but I’m not sure I would reach for this album alone with this collection in this order.

6/10. I can understand those tempted to go as far as 7 though.

My older sister was a big 10cc fan and though I was familiar them I had no idea till now how much of it I had subliminally absorbed. Played this and few of their other albums over the last few days and was amazed at how many tracks I knew pretty much word for word and the memories they triggered! Must say something about their quality.

Giving it 7/10 because
  • they ploughed their own furrow from the off and did what made them happy which i think is almost always admirable
  • you can clearly hear how talented they are and it hints at other great stuff to come
  • every now and then I think they are a bit too chuffed with their own cleverness but you can forgive a bit of self indulgence when they could also produce bangers like they did
  • agree with many that have said subsequent albums, particularly Deceptive Bends, are better; but as debut albums go it's a fantastic and, in hindsight, interesting listen
great suggestion @Saddleworth2, brought back lots of memories of a simpler time. Was having a little sing to myself earlier and my wife said 'why are you making stupid guitar noises and who the fuck is mandy' :-)

Just a last word from me on this nomination. Thanks to everyone that has contributed and I am especially pleased that the album brought some of you a degree of pleasure and enjoyment. For me that is the main purpose of the thread.

it’s funny listening to it over the last week or so with a mind to some of the points raised and I agree, it’s too heavy on the late 50s early 60s do wop and surf scene. They did learn though and their subsequent albums didn’t make the same mistake. 10cc inhabited a brief but happy spell in my life so I will always regard them with affection if not the obsessive love I have for one or two other acts.
Thanks again chaps.

It's been interesting watching the scores for 10cc rolling in, especially this morning where @Saddleworth2 's selection went as high as 4th, but a few lower scores meant that it finally settled in at 9th place - 15 votes with an average of 6.73. I think that this was an album that nobody disliked and everybody got something out of it, so great selection, sir.

This week, our nominator is @OB1, so whenever you're ready, feel free to load up the clues.
