The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

One of the 'not for me' unfortunately. Will do my 3rd listen and try, but I might not have anything meaningful to contribute on this one.

Did my 3 listens, as I said, not for me this one. The guitarist can clearly play guitar, the drummer can drum, the singer can sing/wail, etc. Doesn't do anything for me however. All pretty professional, but basic. The Sacrement is about the only song I felt like I noticed. Other albums I felt similar about I gave a 5, so will do here too.

On a positive, been giving So Runs The World Away that bit more of time I had previously intended to do, and more of it has grown on me.

Hadn't listened to this album for quite sometime so it was good to listen to it again and ascertain if my thoughts on the quality of musicianship and melody and interesting and necessary chord changes had altered over the years for better or worse.

No stand out track for me but Original Man , Year Zero and the bonus track Glow that wasn't available in Oz at the time were well written and Walter Wray nailed the vocals IMO to bring it up to a 7/10.

Sound production and while I prefer their second album this was an excellent choice and more than deserves to be on the album review list.

I've not come across these before so I was quite looking forward to it.

I had a listen this afternoon and it was ok. It reminded me at times of INXS which is no bad thing.

It wasn't bad but there wasn't enough to grab me really. It was fairly middle of the road. Some of the tracks were better than others but it felt quite same-y throughout. It certainly isn't bad, but doesn't have that (sorry) x-factor to make it stand out.

It gets a 6 from me.

Same for me, had a listen but it did nothing for me. Run of the mill, 4 chord songs, rinse and repeat. I watched "Is This Love" video and the singer seems to emulate Michael Hutchins quite a lot (INXS). (Clothes, actions, voice). They could be INSX or INXSive.
I got bored tbh, it just became meaningless for me, sorry.

2/10

Gave it a few listens and thought it was well executed but a bit generic. I thought the playing was strong but the writing was only average tbh. I also thought the production was good but a bit too polished at times which made it seem a bit sterile. I understand the INXS/Hutchins comparisons and I'm a bit surprised Walter Wray didn't appear to do much else other than this band, maybe he wasn't up for it?

It's interesting because of the recent 'lost albums of the 80's' in many way this is objectively a 'better' record (playing, production etc) than the Lost Songs of the Confederacy from a few weeks ago, but I just didn't enjoy it in the way I did that one; which of course is the beauty of music, it's emotional and subjective nature.

5/10 for me

As an aside given that Dominic Miller plays on this, I watched an interview a while ago with him and Sting, think it might have been on Beato's channel. Anyway, as you would imagine Sting tends to dominate and Miller sits there at times with a slightly martyred/pained expression that could either be interpreted as (a) I know my mate here can be a bit pretentious and blather on but actually he's a great musician and a really nice guy or (b) I know he's a bit of twat but the money's good. I'd like to think it was the former rather than the latter, Miller seemed like a a sound guy to have as your sideman.

Not a band that I was familiar with so was looking forward to giving this a try.

Obviously a competent enough band but just didn't do much for me I'm afraid. Nothing bad, just nothing particularly good either. Reminded me of another band but can't really pin down who.

Overall just found it a bit bland really and not something I could see myself returning to.

5/10.

Sums it up perfectly for me.5/10.

Well , I wanted some driving music after the Pat Metheny album and this has tunes to drive to.I like the vocalist and like others have said the band is certainly proficient.
The album starts off well enough but there wasn’t enough on the rest of the album to make me want to discover more or add to a playlist.

Not surprisingly some tracks reminded me of Midnight Oil ,Rob.Pleasant enough and another band I’d not heard of, so a good pick.

5/10
