The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

A part of Get it on? Lol it's the whole basis of Cigarettes & Alcohol
Keep up! I was referring g to “Get On It” from the album that we are reviewing.

No argument about”Get It On “ - that was blatantly ripped off by Oasis.
A fine choice to lay before us all here Rob.
As I think I have mentioned before, one of my fave gigs was Charlatans at The Boston Arms Pub, in Tufnell Park. Back then so much energy to them and somethign that little bit different from what was out there. This choice has made me go back and revisit and does make me wonder why I dont spend more time with them.
I think for the overall variety and muscianship I think the Northwich boys are way ahead of the Burnage boys
I like the first three Oasis albums but agree that The Charlatans are streets ahead.

First listen.

It's a wall of weirdly produced noise with what sounds like a poor oasis tribute act singing over the top. I googled them, turns out they are from Birmingham.

11 songs all sounding the same apart from the rubbish end one and one in the middle that was a bit slower. I'll delve into that more when I listen again.

Not that I want to listen again really as it's quite dire. But 3 listens is what I give all of these albums and three listens it shall get. God help my ears.
They all sound the same? WTF? There’s definitely something up with year hearing, Bob. If you don’t like it that’s fair enough but how can a gentle acoustic ballad sound the same as a slide guitar-led track or a club instrumental?

Even though The Charlatans pre-date Oasis by at least 5 years there has always been a mutual respect but they sound nothing alike.

August 11, 1996, supporting Oasis in what was a bittersweet performance for the band
The Charlatans' performance at Knebworth was bittersweet because it took place just three weeks after the death of their keyboard player, Rob Collins, in a car crash.
The performance was a vindication for the band, who had previously been written off as one-hit wonders.
Martin Duffy stepped in to fill Collins' place at Knebworth, learning all of the band's songs.
Oasis's lead singer, Liam Gallagher, dedicated the song "Cast No Shadow" to Collins.

Glad you enjoyed it. If there's time in the crowded listening space, I can recommend the album that came after this - Us and Us Only. There are times on that that the Dylan influence is even more apparent but they mix it up to good effect. Like I said in my review, it's a toss-up for which of these albums is the better.
Saw the charlatans last year for first time ever and was impressed by the quality and consistency of most of their songs. Liked 'my beautiful friend' especially which is off that album so I'll give this one a listen too

@RobMCFC
Cheers for the review, this is one of my favourite albums and it still takes me places when I play it today. When I first heard the single 'Tellin' Stories' I was convinced it was going to get to number 1, I was absolutely hooked by it.
I bought this in Manchester Airport before I went for a lads holiday in Gran Canaria in August 97 and had the time of my life and this album is the soundtrack of my 14 days of absolute madness, (so much so that I was ready to pack in England and go back out there working but eventually got talked out of it but that's another story for another time)

I love this album so much, they are so underrated the charlatans, they bang out these killer tunes and brilliant albums but don't really get any credit. I've seen them countless times and every time they was on point.

Fantastic mate.

My man.

The Charlatans are one of my favourite bands of all time and I regularly play their early albums in their entirety.

They’ve produced tune after tune for 35 years now and have always evolved and kept their sound fresh.

They’re fucking brilliant live and their gigs always have a top vibe.

Tellin Stories has a number of fucking belters (the singles are up with there with their very best) on it but imo isn’t one of their best LPs and doesn’t flow as well as others.

I’m baffled by the number of posters who haven’t heard much of their stuff aside from The Only One I Know.

Here’s a few of their belters

I did say apart from in there...

Do try and read before piling in full steam...
Whether you like the songs or not, the quote: “11 songs all sounding the same apart from the rubbish end one and one in the middle that was a bit slower” does not do justice to the variety of styles, tempos and arrangements on offer here, but I’m happy to disagree and move on.

First listen as well, which tends to be an eye opener...

Things will calm down after numbers two and three...
