The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

Obviously we still have a few hours to run on this today, but @Bill Walker, because of the time difference, you can feel free to post clues to your choice during your evening.

I opened up my Sonos app and searched for Eels and bugger me if I didn't still have three of their albums in my collection, including this one. I remember getting them as a job lot from Sifters and although I no longer have the (any) CDs the digital version remains. Not though on the USB stick in my car, at some point they must have been part of a cull to make that more manageable.

I'd heard of but never heard Eels when I first got the CDs, I've read plenty before and since about them and they should really be a band I like...

I don't think I've ever been as conflicted about one of our album choices. There is a big sticking point with me of the singers voice, which does go against the grain a bit for me. They're his songs, who am I to criticise his delivery. That aside though, I've had this on a few times. The two openers are the most memorable, Novocaine for the Soul is very good, Susan's House is OK but feels like a bit of a novelty song and for some reason puts me in mind of that Crash test Dummies song (you know the one, I had a girlfriend at the time who had their CD and only their CD so every time it was her turn to play music that is what we listened to. I remember it being a dull album and that song really began to get on my nerves, as did she...)

I found myself losing interest at points but; every so often there was something that might be sit up, take notice, a bit of brilliance, a great hook or break or whatever (you musos will describe it better) and I'm thinking this album has something different. And then he sings and while that isn't always bad, well, not bad, his voice doesn't do it for me.

So, could this have scored higher with a different vocal style? Possibly, so it feels harsh not to give it a higher score. But while it intrigued me at times, I liked the overall sound and production, it didn't keep me constantly engaged. It's a 6.

Will it be reinstated on the USB though? Or having been discovered lurking in my iTunes or whatever they call it nowadays will it be ousted? I still don't know, I'll probably listen to the other two before deciding for sure.

Definitely the biggest nostalgia nomination so far for me - I bought this during my Teen indie days when I was so into discovering new Music, I think it was actually that Trigger Happy scene that led me to The Eels.

Great hearing it again.

Obviously ‘Novocaine for the Soul’ the big hit and stand out , followed by ‘Susan’s House’ … some nice melancholy and use of strings with ‘Your Lucky Day In Hell’ and ‘Flower’ and the beautiful ‘Man Child’

Indie/Grunge with ‘Not Ready Yet’ and ‘Rags To Rags’

I’d say overall this is a 7 really but it was great hearing it again and transporting back to a happy place - I’ll go 8
