The Album Review Club - Week #191 (page 1286) - Harlequin Dream - Boy & Bear

I liked this album. Very gentle. Nice voice and finger picked guitar. Melancholic and introspective suits my mood at present. Favourite track was river man. The benefit of posting late in the cycle is pretty much everything has been covered by some excellent reviews so I can remain a lazy sod.
I haven't listened enough to compare it with Bryter Layter but I will return to it again.

I think I would score it somewhere between 6 and 7 so what the hell, I'll go 6.5.

What was particularly pleasing this week was the number of people willing to step up and review Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left. 19 reviewers awarded an average of 7.66, which is good enough for a seat in the top 10 and gives @GoatersLeftShin an incredible 3rd album in the top 8.

That's it for Round #11 - thanks to everybody who nominated or took the time to review and comment. It's a fantastic music community we have here with lots of knowledgeable posters and plenty of strong opinions, which we seem to be able to carry from week to week without too much bother. And on a personal note, what a fantastic thing that this thread and the other music threads brought three of us together for a night out in Manchester this week!

If you are not on the reviewers list but would like to be, just ask on here or drop me a DM.

I'll put up some provisional dates for Round #12 soon, and watch out for the clue for this week's editor's choice coming right up.

Unrelated, but generally related, give yourself a spin of Ruins by Wolf People. A bit if Kasabian had a love child with Jethro Tull, while Josh Homme watched through the window.
Cheers for the heads up - early listen sounds decent. Still getting some decent mileage out of The Devil and the Almighty Blues - that album is the dogs wotsits

Well done to Coatigan.

Speak Now - Taylor Swift (2010)

EDITOR’S CHOICE

Taylor_Swift_-_Speak_Now_cover.png

The idea with an editor’s choice is to select an album that will generate discussion. This is only the 3rd such selection, the 2nd by me, and I want to make the editor’s choice different from my personal picks, ensuring that it is an artist that everybody has heard of.

I’m sure it won’t have escaped people’s notice that Taylor Swift is currently the biggest artist in the world in terms of album/song streams, live tours and social media coverage. She’s had a few mentions on this thread and even a “threat” to nominate one of her albums (although not by me).

Whilst before this pick I was familiar with a lot of the songs from this album, I’d never sat down and listened to it from beginning to end. I’ll be reviewing it along with all of you so won’t say too much about it, but I’ll say a few things by way of introduction.

After gaining support with her first two albums, Fearless winning the Grammy for album of the year, rising country artist Taylor Swift leaned more into classic rock/pop for her third album, Speak Now. Whilst there are a few songs that betray her country roots, this is an album of big songs, big choruses with large arena performances in mind. All the songs on Speak Now were written by Taylor Swift without the need for co-writers, a move that silenced some critics who questioned her songwriting ability.

She may currently be the biggest artist in the world, but she’s never been judged in the Blue Moon court of opinion, so it’s your chance to speak now.

Note on version

It’s well known that due to a dispute with her former manager over song ownership, Taylor Swift has been releasing re-recorded versions of all of her earlier albums. With this dispute now settled, and the artists now owning the rights to all her songs, we will be listening to the original version of Speak Now and not the “Taylor’s Version” release.

I know why you have chosen one of her (still quite) country albums but I feel you've done the dirty on your assistant editor!!

The woman is a cautionary tale. Goes from harmless aspiring country musician to being a major player in the destruction of popular music as we knew it!

She's like some sort of musical Anakin Skywalker except she's nowhere near earning her redemption yet :-)

Well done to Coatigan.

I shall consult with my Granddaughter. A very very keen Swifty (albeit she likes Billie just a little better).
