The Album Review Club - Week #191 (page 1286) - Harlequin Dream - Boy & Bear

Coming from the master, “A nice ramble” is the ultimate compliment!! Absorbing DSoTM at such a young age meant my pretentious years were still ahead - probably more akin to my Acid Jazz era ;)
You over rate me and most of it isnt true.

Apparently I've heard more of this album that I realised. I think my dad may have had it on CD when I was growing up. The only album I definitely remember him having on CD was the Jimi Hendrix one with all the boobs on it.

funny how that stuck in your young mind.

Happy Birthday to your brother @GornikDaze and that was a nice ramble. DSOTM is an album I have been avoiding for two reasons:
1) i'll dislike, it's a waste of my time and I'll get annoyed by its classic status
2) i'll really like it and then that would prove my sisters ex boyfriend right - he is a big Floyd fan but a monumental muppet

I suspect without really listening to it that this is an album best encountered when you are young and pretentious. Being old and pretentious has primarily made me grumpy and contrarian
Just mark it a 4/10 and maintain your original stance.......... ;-)

I've had a full listen now and there are bits that are definitely a 4 - like where that woman stubbs her toe and just keeps going on for hours. But it's disappointingly better than I was expecting

Can you listen to this album with ‘fresh’ ears and judge it anew? I think it is going to be extremely difficult. Is it superior or inferior to ‘wish you where here’? Does Dave G get a free pass for introducing HRH Kate Bush to the world? These are the big questions.
I've not heard it in full for a long while, prefer Wish You Were Here. I shall put it on my expensive record player and sit with a wee dram in the dark and see what's what.

Point of order @GornikDaze . I enjoyed your write-up and wish your brother a happy birthday, however I'm not sure how he could have been following another Manchester team unless he supports a lower league team like Wythenshawe Town ? Just sayin'.
If you’ll permit me another waffle…

Having saved up the required number of Typhoo Tea tokens, the story goes that my brother asked our mum who dad supported. Her reply was the team from Manchester. Not realising there were two (he was young) he sent off his tokens and proudly showed my dad the reward for begging my nan and granddad to save their tea tokens.

Dad was understandably a bit miffed but Amazon style returns were not as easy in the early 60s. The team photo was kept and displayed in his bedroom for maximum annoyance. Thankfully, I knew better than to annoy my dad and pledged my allegiance to the blue team as we won the cup in 1969 (conveniently).

As best man for his second marriage I tried to right his wrongs. I told the room the story as part of my speech so all his mates are aware that he is a closet blue and his red trait was a mistake. He still has the framed correct Typhoo Tea team picture hidden away at home.

I'm became a little blue partly in opposition to my older siblings who were both rags, partly because my Auntie Annie essentially said she'd buy me better presents if I was a blue, but mostly because City were just cooler and I liked them more. Oh and I wanted to support a Manchester team :-)

I love those alarms clocks, the cash register, and the spoken word that shows up at the beginning and end.

As far as the production, I've heard that the sound engineer assigned to the band went on to do some great things, but that would be another Project. ;-)

Thanks @GornikDaze, I needed something easy this week while out and about. Congrats on your brother's Bday too, a very nice homage.
We haven’t had an Alan Parson’s record yet have we?
That would put the cat among the pigeons!

No, we have not here. But I do know that over on the Rock Evolution thread that there's at least one poster here who nominated them FIRST, and has kept the tracks going through the 70s as it is now in 1983. ;-)

They also did very well in '82 with an Eye in the Sky towards a pretty crowded field.

The first few football games I went to were all at OT to watch United. I think Ive mentioned before that I was taken by the husband of my mum's friend. He was in the danish navy and when he was on leave he'd borrow me and go to the football. Dunno why.

My dad had got out of the habit of going to the football probably because he had 4 kids and worked shifts on the buses so it was a while before he took me to a game although there was no doubt I'd be a blue. My dad had an extensive match day programme collection peaking with the 81 cup final and replay. He also had a large City mirror that listed all the trophies city had won.

As a young lad I went strawberry picking for a month in Wisbech in Cambridgeshire. It was all cassettes in them days and the only one we had was Dark Side of The Moon - listened to it on repeat for 4 weeks solid. I genuinely haven't listened to it since over 40 years later. It was revolutionary then and I remember going to watch them at Maine Road some years later. Based on what I remember I'd rate it 7.5 out of 10
