The Album Review Club - Week #191 (page 1286) - Harlequin Dream - Boy & Bear

Who the fuck is Tay Tay? Send me a link and I’ll give it a listen and dish out a ban if appropriate!
Seriously, do yourself a favour and step away from the thread. Forget you ever asked who Tay Tay is and your life will thank you forever.

For what it’s worth the person who mentioned her and Morrisey in the same way is imho seriously deluded, but each to their own.

I'm also realizing(s)ing that I recall commenting to a friend that B&R and AGLY were the exact same song with different lyrics which may be why I stopped paying attention.
Surely not? B&R is fairly slow tempo. Both great songs though.
Somewhere there's beena conversation about Maria Elena from this album. Haven't looked but if it's not on the playlist thread I might be getting confused with another forum!
Yes, I think I nominated that on one of the playlists.

No, it was on the playlist thread, last year. The search facility is your friend :)

Boo, oh the shame!

Anyway nice to hear some - proper instruments - on this.

I have a confession. Most of the times you say proper instruments on this thread, I secretly imagine it said like below (skip to 40 seconds in) ;).

Now that I have put it there, that's now all you'll hear every time it comes up ;)

Ha-ha. Uncannily accurate. There’s certainly some proper instruments on this album.

I don’t understand people who live in a world where they can happily listen to albums without proper instruments. I was going to say “music” rather than “albums”, but I even I accept the beauty of a catchy Eurovision song that has a beat driven electronically.

Although comedy is the best use of electronic music.

If the Smithereens were college boys they would be well turned out, sit unobtrusively in the middle of the classroom, always get their assignments in on time and score well enough not to draw attention to themselves and not so well that they would draw attention to themselves. They would be competent but unexceptional at sports, not threatening to make the team. And when people were to look back at the yearbooks in years to come everyone would look at their faces and say "who was that again"?

Their mothers would love them though and they would get decent office jobs and nice wives.

Probably

I've been finding them a bit.. the Yawpers, without the yawping.

An notable amount of Gin Blossoms there.

Anyone else finding the big 11 on the album cover an attempt to subconsciously influence you to give it an 11?

I’m more of a mind to split the big 11 down the middle and give it a 1

Had a listen today whilst on my walk and definitely could hear the Elvis Costello voice, which is one I do like. I'll be honest, I couldn't hear any Buddy Holly or The Beatles in there though, he might've well said he was influenced by Pavarotti and Dianna Ross!!

I'm not a huge fan of this type of music to be honest, it feels a bit middle of the road and lacks great riffs and rhythms. That's not to say it's all bad, it certainly isn't but I like my rock a bit more off the edge of the road to be honest. I'm not a fan of the likes of Springsteen apart from the odd track to be honest.

I can appreciate the songs though and I did find the album grew on me towards the end, but even still I just wanted it to shift up a gear. After I'd listened to it, I asked myself whether I liked it - I did a bit, but would I play it again and I think it's a no. It's just not my cup of tea.

Overall, glad I listened to it and it was a new band/artist I've not heard of before.

6/10

Ah, forgot about “Yesterday Girl”. Like that one too.

And perusing their Greatest Hits — “Only A Memory” was also huge here. I must be getting old.

This is as simple and straightforward as one can get — and a bit of a throwback to when bands took the best ten songs they had at the time and just put them on the record without dicking around.

Had a listen on the way to the game and thought the songs where it seemed Elvis Costello was making an appearance the best and a bit of Big Star in there which is never a bad thing.
Can't see it scoring more than the Gin Blossoms though
IMO the best songs here aren’t as good as the GBs best but the weakest ones are better-crafted with no throwaways.

Limmy needs to work on his Norfolk accent, I bet if we made lazy inaccurate generalisations about the Scotch then he'd have something to say?

There was a bloke on R4 yesterday who studied the tunes ice cream vans play and it's just occurred to me that Rob might want to use 'ice cream van music' as an appropriate insult for a certain type of electronic music he's not that keen on! That said I'd expect nothing less than the retort that at least you can hear the melody with an ice cream van :-)

Coatigan is gonna come on and give you hell about referring to him/them as "Scotch" - that's a drink. I think the grouping you were reaching for is "Scots".

Like soundtrack music, Eurovision, comedy situations and the backing for videos, electronic music for ice cream vans gets a pass because it's for a functional purpose. Electronic music for serious discourse is laughable - only joking, don't write to your MP :)

But I do like the idea of using "ice cream van music" as a put down a very nice idea. I'll be sharpening my quill awaiting its next appearance.

Some of the comments so far that the Smithereens somehow have no edge is most surprising. They came up through the US college rock system with R.E.M., The Replacements and others. How you can listen to that guitar sound and come to that conclusion is baffling, but each to their own.

Scotch is a drink mate. Think you'll find, it is 'Scots'.

The guitar is fine. It is the vocals that are the issue. I do think with better singing, this would be a very good album.

Think it definitely suffers from being judged based on our age/musical saturation. It seems pretty apparent the people that like it, likes it back in the day, and the people that don't haven't heard it before - but have heard many other relatively comparable things in the meantime, and are aeeing it through that prism.

Which I have noticed on a few albums, and kinda can't really be helped!
