The Album Review Club - Week #195 (page 1310) - A New World Record - ELO

You glad you went Hammer?

It was a good crack !

Probably the most smallest intimate gig I've been too (tiny room upstairs in Pub) been going to that Pub for years and never even knew there was a upstairs, they had a good vibe about them and sounded fresh, one of the guitarist gave me a cig outside.
I'll dock a point for how the singer introduced the band .. 'we are the sloooooooow mooooootion cowboys ' , 'Invisible Stars' and a few others were nice. Stayed for about 8 tracks, then got a KFC twister wrap and made the half 10 train, happy days.

Did you mention this thread?

Damn! Should have had a few proper beers...

Yeah that was an opportunity to spread the BM gospel missed. Back in the US they could confuse crowds by introducing songs with "we'd like to dedicate this next one to Bimbo and The Torpedo Boys, thanks for the 3/10 ya bastard'

BH should have asked for a request, it's a scientifically known fact that all country artists know Blue Moon.

Thanks for putting that up, as you say a very intimate gig. Does this mean you're now officially our second youtuber (if you discount our irregular visitor The Notorious V.B.B) ?

Be honest, was the gig the highlight, or the KFC?

'We'd like to dedicate this next song to a very exclusive club of two, called No Country For Old Men'

I know I bang on about this, but live music is so so important imho. Nothing can really substitute that. And I also find it does give a different perspective of the artist, most often for the better. Be interesting to see how much of your revuew is influenced by that experience. Plus, you now get a cool story to tell.

I've listened to this album 3 times, and now gone and bought myself a bolo tie on ebay..

.. is what some of you may have expected me to say at the end of this. Alas, no, some barriers are just not meant to break. People have listened to my shouty nonsense and other stuff, so I gave it the 3 genuine listens, and a part of me did indeed hope something might shift. But nope. 'It's not you, it's me.'

This is quite an easy split really, between what I 'think' of this album, and what I 'feel' about it.

I think there is some quality stuff on here, good writing, themes of loss, bits of hope, relatable stuff. Good performance and delivery. Some 'indie-like' level of what feels like genuine expression and softness. If it was based solely on that, I'd go an easy 7 maybe pushing an 8.

Then there is what I feel when I listen to it. And that is somewhere between the irresistible urge to skip about 12 seconds into each song, and the raging desire to smash this album into a million fucking pieces, then crush those pieces into a fine dust, hoover the dust up, smash that hoover up, bag it tightly so nothing can get out, then bury it deep deep down below even the bodies in the foundations of the Kingston bridge. Which, at best is a 2, if I am being generous.

So I guess the fair thing is to split the difference and give it a 4.5.

Just fyi, to save you future potential blushes, I'm pretty sure the technical term is 'it was good craic'. No 'a', and spelt all funny. You're welcome.

You'd probably need to use a Henry hoover as the bags are decent otherwise you'll up and stuck in a cycle of hoover, smash, choke on the dust, hoover etc. with all the micro plastics in your body from the vinyl or cd you'll eventually die of some horrific lung disease before you'd even get to the bridge

I’ve seen loads of Americana bands in small venues, quite a few at the BP in Manchester.

Nothing beats that LIVE music though, as a million f'n pieces or not can't be accomplished there!

(though headphones are always an option for the brave in such a small venue)
