The Ashes 2015

England bowling dictates that we'll get them 320-9 and then Starc and Hazlewood will get a 200 run partnership as Broad tries to bowl them out by bouncing the ball by his own front foot for 20 overs.

Good day overall, the best I've seen England bowl and work in the field for a long while. Turgid pitch but the ECB obviously panicked and had to kill it. I'd rather lose with a strong fight and learning experience, a la Aussies 2013, that plod in matches where we just kill the pitch and our players learn nothing about playing cricket in the real world. The NZ ODIs were a breath of fresh air, we need the bounciest pitches and blood our batsmen to grow a pair and take Johnson on.

That first paragraph could be as painfully accurate as it is amusing.

I really don't have a problem with countries creating pitches that favour their particular skills; batsmen from both sides have flourished and Starc took 5 wickets by putting the ball in the right place, something Johnson appeared incapable of doing. The Australians tried to bowl too fast, relying less on line and length, and suffered the consequences on a ground where the boundaries are not set far back. They need to learn to adapt to British conditions, too. At the same time, we've seen players already in poor form get themselves out and those prepared to graft get their just rewards. If the remaining three days mirror the first two, we might still see it go down to the wire, as long as Broad keeps aiming at the top of off stump.

Any country that tailors a pitch to suit the opposition is off their rocker IMO so I don't know why England are getting so much criticism for this. Australia have tailored their pitches to suit their tremendous batting line-up when they had that all conquering team of the 90's and 00's and we're all aware of the benign pitches that the Indian subcontinent countries have been producing for years. Bowlers simply have to adapt accordingly so Johnson has to find another way of getting batsmen out rather than trying to bounce them out all the time, just as Jimmy has to adapt his game when outside of England where the conditions are less conducive to swing bowling. I'll also add that English weather conditions tend to be such that even if you prepare a pitch to suit one side in particular, there are still other variables at play that might not be so prevalent in other countries meaning the outcome isn't as guaranteed.

Not watching it but got the Cricinfo commentary on the computer at work - we've put the squeeze on them so far and need to keep it up. These 2 can bat a bit and are capable of cutting loose.

yeah stokes just gone for 12 of his over need to get Haddin out
