I think they ditched Nick Compton a bit too early. I know he wasn't pulling up any trees as it were but I think he could have been given more time. He seems totally out of contention now though. other than that it is either Bell or Root back up there which would be a mistake imo. We are now getting to a generation of players brought up with T20 and none of them know how to open an innings properly.

Not quite yet. 53 wanted, with 8 wickets in hand. Lose a couple of quick wickets though, and then you can panic.

I think we need to persevere with Root as Cooks opening partner. I know we tried that before he was dropped down the order but he is an opening batsman and the talent he has I'm sure he'd soon get to grips with the role in test cricket. We cannot keep losing our first 2-3 wickets so cheaply putting so much pressure on our middle order.

Surprised by the Aussie approach today, fully expected Johnson to be tearing in from the start and piling on the pressure. He was 2nd change and bell was away by then.
