The battle for 4th place

Although finishing 2nd would be nice, it doesn't really matter as you get exactly the same for finishing 2nd and 3rd, apart from a bit more prize money

What matters is we finish 3rd not 4th, to avoid the CL play-off

2nd place would give us significantly more money from the champions league market pool next season.

This weekends results will be absolutely crucial.

We really need Leicester to beat the shite and we need to beat Saints. . .

If we fuck up on Sunday, that will probably be curtains.

If we do fuck up on Sunday we'll still be at least fourth if we win our last two.

Maybe I'm being blase about this but I'm not worried in the slightest. 100% confident we will finish 3rd or higher. The players staying won't want a champions league qualifier straight after the euros. Those leaving won't want the ignomy of having a top 5 or 6 finish on their CV. It will impact their bargaining power for their next club. Nasri is back. Kdb is rested & fit. There's no way we will lose to the Arse with so much at stake. It will be a full house with another rip roaring atmosphere. Looking up not down. ;-)

It would indeed be very City-esque for that to happen. Or even to make the final and our own new manager knock himself out of the CL. That would be very typical City fortune.

I can see the argument about going for the league and not playing our best players in Europe to guarantee pot 1 in the CL the season after next.

Two big problems - though - with your thinking.

One is that unless we win the Europa our European coefficient would drop a lot from basically throwing the season in Europe. That would impact the future. As would the loss of income from not going far in the Europa which is already a seriously poor relation of Champions League income anyhow.

Secondly, Pep will be signing big players and I do not think he would be wanting to tell these (hopefully) big names and our own long term CL players that they will not be getting any European football next year as we intend to play the kids instead and get them just to win the league as fast as possible for CL the next sesason.

Yes Europa would give the chance to field some kids but we have to wonder as to how much basically not playing our first team in Europe at all would impact on some of the players we might hope to sign this Summer.
Without either agreeing or disagreeing with your post, our coefficient rating should be the last thing on our minds. City are now a club that has to count failure as an inability to win the EPL and success as winning the title. By achieving success, we will be in Pot One come what may.

Only if United drop points somewhere. If they win, we lose, Sunday then we cannot catch them by winning both of ours if they win the rest.

As for Arsenal they would have to catch up our goal difference - around 9 goals - but they play Norwich and Villa at home - which is not that much of a stretch if they have to do it to pip us to top 4. Villa are that bad a 9-0 win is not utterly absurd. Liverpool recently got 6 against them. We got 4 and it could have been more.

Yes, beat Arsenal and Swansea and we should be okay but we should not presume that. We need a point Sunday to keep it all in our hands.

Norwich are fighting for their lives and will be no pushovers. Even if Arsenal win by two and we lose by two on Sunday they'd need to beat Villa by eight to better our goal difference if we beat them and Swansea. And we'd presumably keep in touch with their score like that Liverpool game. Oh.
