The beauty of Manchester

My favourite building in Manchester was Spring Gardens post office which boasted the longest Victorian colonnade in the UK. So the Philistines knocked it down.
Just had a look for that, can only find pictures of the outside, looks fantastic, and probably doesn’t even do it justice.

I worked for Manchester Council for 25 years and I always loved going to the Town Hall for meetings, events etc. From the fantastic stairs and corridors, committee rooms, Council Chamber to the tiny offices in the eaves, it was a treat to be there.

It’s the absolute pride of Manchester and to think it was suggested to demolish it in the 1950’s!

Let’s hope it comes back better than ever when they finish the refurbishment.
When I was a kid I used to think the Town Hall was made of black stone.

Jesus.
What a beauty and what a travesty to demolish (Manchester has lost so much, albeit thankfully saved a fair bit too).

The old Arndale area makes you sob too.

I used to live on the Merseybank Estate so Chorlton Water Park was my back garden, and the amount of litter around there used to get right on my tits. Especially after Friday nights when people would go there to drink and they’d leave all their cans lying around.

Could be very nice there but never quite was because of that.

I find Wythenshawe Park much cleaner. But it doesn’t have much water other than the Brook.

We did get a lot of bright green parakeets going between CWP and Southern Cemetary though.
In the seventies there was a paddling pool in the playground area and a small pond with an island in the middle near to the golf course but they filled it in a while back. There used to be a few small ponds in the woods that almost circle the park, not sure if they are still there either. I camped in there when I was about ten catching Sticklebacks with a stack of jam butties and a bottle of Sunkist....Wouldn't dream of it now. Still a nice place to go though, especially if you know the local stories about the place.

Fletcher moss park in the South, Heaton park in the North. Both cracking parks. City center changes every time you go there. New bits open up and become popular, old bits get left behind, then re-discovered. Hard to keep up.
