The biggest away following at City?

Yes, Sunderland has to be one of the largest, if not THE largest. Good vocal support too, remember it quite well:

(fixed the vid above for you bob)

...they were all over the place/area that day, bit like how the Scots use to go Wembley (granted not as many), best I've seen at Maine Road, easily
14K of em imo.

How did they get relegated with such great defending?

Yep, definately Sunderland in my life time. That was a crackin day as well. We were all drinkin together in The Parkside, sharin songs, the lot. We taught em "Singin' aye aye yippie yippie aye" They loved it and sang it through out the game, obviously changed the words to if you hate Newcastle Utd..... When the Platt Lane was opened to away fans, not many clubs' fans filled it. I think it held 8000, but Sunderland had the whole corner as well. Unbelievable!

-- Sun Feb 16, 2014 11:14 pm --

Agree mate the crowd was much larger than that, i was in the Parkside too that day and there were Sunderland fans all over the the streets outside and drinking every gaff dry. They were all over town too the night before, i can recall speaking to some top lads in the Boardwalk and they were confident they were going to survive.

I think you are wrong about aye aye ippie chant though as we nicked it from them after we heard it at a previous trip to Roker Park :-)

I think it was just over 39000 but your right there were many more than that.

I always remember being in the kippax and due to the crushing me and my mates moved towards the end near the platt lane as generally few people would stand in there. As some have said the Sunderland fans were housed in there and as others probably had the same idea there were fans jostling towards that block and others moving away causing a bottleneck which as a 15 year old terrified me. To this day I can see my mate about twelve rows in front having been carried in a surge which developed.

The atmosphere was incredible that day partcicularly when Sunderland went 2-1 up before Quinn (I think equalised), within a minute, just before half-time.

Finishing 5th above United was the equivalent of winning the Champs league for a lad having never seen City do or win anything of note. Typically, two weeks later we were back in the shadows after they beat Barca.

Scunthorpe held the record at COMS for a while after bringing 7,000 for an FA Cup tie. They scored first and the South Stand exploded. Then Robbie Fowler scored a hat trick and shut them up.
