Never understood the popularity of "Ghost Town", so I've gone with Keane (but that's not really any good either).

Watched a programme on channel 4 called 60 days on the estates where a chap spent a few weeks in London, Birmingham and Glasgow. It was rubbish but what it did show was drug use, crime and social derogation that still exist on these estates. Ghost Town was released 42 years ago to this week and tackled the same issues then. What a sad state of affairs. In my opinion one of the greatest number ones of all time. Keane share their name with Roy. That would have been enough on its own.

I'm about to put 'I agree with Rob' on the album thread but you need to thread ban yourself for this comment mate ;-)

I know I am of an age that makes me biased but I think Ghost Town has a legitimate claim for the greatest ever #1 in this country. The social commentary aspect is well acknowledged but it's also a brilliant piece of music. It's meticulously composed and arranged but is not at all sterile, the tension in both the country and the band is reflected and palpable in the tension between the strange hybrid of styles and influences throughout the song. It sounds like nothing else that's hit the top before or since.
