the changing attitudes of people towards City and our fans

A couple of questions...

1) Since the takeover, have you known anywhere on the internet beyond the club-specific forums like Blue Moon, etc, where you can have a semi-sensible discussion with fans of other clubs about City? If so, where?

2) What's the worst anti-City sentiment you've experienced online since we were taken over, and where was it?

It's been dawning on me recently just how hard it is to ever talk City with other football supporters now, which is a real shame. People almost without fail, irrespective of who they support, seem to have really bought into all the bad press we get. Sure, you have to expect a bit of stick when you're good, especially if your success has been aided by a rich owner, but even given that, some of the anti-City feeling is f*cking preposterous.

On one general sport forum i've used for ten years, we went from being the wise sages of the place to utter, utter scum more or less overnight. A few had a chuckle when we won the title how we did, but generally, our opinions count for nothing now. It's as if the pre-2008 stuff didn't happen. What could we possibly know about anything, we've got four £20m strikers?! We're apparently not even a 'proper club' now - the 100+ years of history, the cup finals, titles, ups and downs, ah who cares?

I signed up to Twitter at the start of last season. When we played Villa in the Cup, i couldn't quite believe the response from the general public afterwards. On that same night, a bunch of United fans tried to start rumours that our supporters had been singing songs mocking Stilian Petrov. Within an hour or two these stories had gathered pace and were being taken as fact. After spending a short while trying to defend our supporters, i knocked it on the head and closed my account. Thankfully, nothing game of those tales, but it was a bit of a wake up call for me, firstly in realising just how much we were hated, secondly as to how the attitudes of supporters have changed. Occasionally i dip into Twitter just to search for something, without having an account, and whenever it involves City you can be sure it'll be 99% peurile nonsense.

Recently, i started lurking on a TV forum (Digital Spy) mainly because i'm a fan of the big US dramas, but also for info about computer games, the odd chat about albums, etc. I noticed they had a football section, so dipped my toe in the water a bit. Never known anything like it - treated like absolute scum from day one. Apparently, if you support City you can only be a glory hunter and probably supported Chelsea beforehand anyway. The ground's the 'Emptihad' and never more than half full (despite tickets being £10, according to one obviously well-ITK chap), the players are only here for the money, but some of them have 'class' and go elsewhere 'for the glory', and 'history' (of which we have none, obviously), we've spent £2bn on players, some of whom are on £500k a week, i could go on and on, you're probably bored.

I find it the same pretty much everywhere else online - forums, blogs, social media sites. Course, it's quite easy to stick to your own, just talk about City with City fans, but it's a shame it's come to that. Do people think it's a societal issue, in that having a throwaway, instant opinion online has become the new having a chat over a couple of pints with your mates, or do you see it as more of a football thing, where anyone who either has success, or has means, or both, instantly becomes some sort of king pantomime villain, and where underachieving or being shit brings kudos, not only to the supporters who go throughout, but to the clubs themselves, as if achieving your goals is vulgar in some way? Is it just harmless banter?

Apologies for what's turned into a bit of a lengthy rant. Feels good to get it off my chest anyway. Perhaps i should just have a thicker skin. Obviously, you're the master of your own destiny regards what opinions you're exposed to, but it'd be nice to be able to talk City outside of our lot again without it coming with such suspiscion. I fear the art of positive, non-tribal football discussion is dead.

Re: the changing opinions of people towards City and our fans...

I used to post on the MEN before it went all facebook, so now post here. The red-blue (or should that be blue-red) banter was good on there, and I find talking to rags much easier than supporters of other clubs, who know nowt about us. Most of the time the conversation starts "According to Talksport ..." at which point I walk away.

In fairness...it's all about success or the ability to succeed...fuelled by thinly veiled jealousy

I hate to bring them up in any conversation but it's similiar to what nited encounter with ABU

Nited have been a very successful team...we hate them because they are our main rival...but a lot of other club supporters hate them because of their continued time at the top

People just like shooting others down

Me too, my username was

RatherBeDeadThanRed

Haven't posted in years though as it went crap and someone else on there decided to pinch my username

Why concern yourself with it?
I started ignoring it a few seasons ago now, stopped giving a fuck the moment we won the FA Cup against Stoke.

I know its bullshit... Let them concern themselves with us.

I know, i know.

It's just i love football, y'know, thoroughly enjoy talking about it, but it's becoming harder and harder to do so without people having f*cking pointless, glib opinions, and being unable to discuss virtually anything without needless bias.

This is a good time to mention our good users who support other clubs on here.

We get honest views and they feel able to post albeit with banter included.
That new fella jack the united fan for example seems a decent chap and ofc we have our bolton and oldham, newcastle, chelsea, west ham lads.
I like this about bm a lot.

It was always going to happen. The day of the takeover I remember a very bitter Andy Jacobs saying 'you'll become the most hated club in the world, believe me'. I don't think we're anything like the most hated club, but some will be jealous. Clubs like Spurs, Villa, Everton and Newcastle will be because they will wish it was them. Clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool will be because they have seen us surpass them in the league, comfortably so where the latter is concerned. Our fans would be exactly the same if Newcastle had had what we've had and we were left with Ireland and Co. in the squad.

The thing is though, who cares what fans of other clubs think? I don't. I didn't when we were shit and I don't know we're not shit. If people are bothered about it though rest assured there will always be a club not so far away from ours who will always be hated more than us. See the many video's of fans cheering our success and united's demise for that.

Before takeover..."Ha ha ha lifelong berties never gonna win owt"

after takeover..."How long you supported citeh"

The most annoying thing for me now is having my support questioned. Before we won anything when you told someone (bar rags or county) you were City they would be fine and accept it.

Now almost immediately you start getting questioned, the most annoying being "so how long have you been a city fan?" erm since I went to Maine Road for the first time as a nipper you bellend.

Ive never actually met a City fan who didnt support us pre takeover it really really offends me that we would be anything like them rag bastards.

One thing I find amusing though I was speaking to a fan of a club I cant remember and he mentioned the ground expansion "Why are you doing that when you dont sell out?" "Well we sold out 18 games out of 19 last season so why wouldnt we expand?"

He genuinely believed all the rag bullshit about the "Emptihad" etc it was hilarious watching him squirm

My outlook on the subject exactly the same as yours mate, fuck them all

It makes me laugh when I see the comments section in articles on bbc sport and sky sports and no matter what the subject is, there's always a comment(s) about city ruining football on the first few.

It's the British way, though. Cast your mind back to the Chelsea take over and you were probably one of those spitting venom in their direction, some still are.

It's very difficult for others to have empathy or value our opinion, because we now seemingly exist on a different planet. I recall watching Russell Brand on questiontime talking about poverty and the housing shortages in London and my wife was shouting at the TV about him being a multi-millionaire.

Calm down dear

the grief I've had about being a blue has generally come from fans of other premiership teams, who are probably just jealous at our ridiculous luck. when I've spoken to fans of lower league clubs, especially some of clubs we met when we down amongst em, they're generally buzzing. chatting to a Walsall fan not so long ago, and he was buzzin for us, said we always brought a cracking turnout etc. and has nothing but respect for us

To sum up, jealous glory seeking sky sports watching fans don't like us, real match going fans who know where we've come from often do. I know who's opinion i care more about.

Exactly! If Newcastle had been chosen by the Sheikh, a club similar in size and starvation of success to ourselves, there would be regular comments on here about how a player has only gone for the money. It's just how it is but for whatever reason it is we have a large number of fans with extremely thin skin. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

My recollection is that most City fans were pleased when Abramovich came in, as it meant that united's stranglehold was under threat.

I, for one, was glad to see a new team have a chance against the power three as it was at the time. The Premier League has been the better for it, otherwise we'd be facing the inevitability of La Liga every year, and who wants that?

I'll even go a bit further. When Wigan beat us in the FA Cup final, I was happy for them. I would have been happier if we had won of course, and I don't care much for Dave "It was Better In My Day" Whelan, but I actually took some enjoyment in seeing a team win something for the first time.

That's why I used Newcastle as an example, as Chelsea were already relatively successful pre-red rom.

Chelsea paying £24m for SWP at the time saved us as a club, so I was happy that they had got the money.
