The Chase

Off topic again but.... On tonight's House of Games there was a round in which the guests had to identify a Continent when given a specified number of blanks to fill in. The first Continent just had 4 blank letters. The comedian and token gay on the Panel, Josh Jones, came up with the answer... America.

I know that. I think its a bit of a trick question to when given so little time to answer.. Anyone in UK is initially going to associate fireworks and 5th November. 4th July gives me vibes of beer, bbqs, flags and Bruce springsteen.
If I was to guess 10 things about 4th July , fireworks is not one of them.
for a country obsessed with firearms they are remarkly strict about fireworks. but some states do allow organised stuff - I've been to a 4th July event where the fireworks were launched off a boat that had been towed out in the bay off just off Cape Cod.

Yes and no. Massachusetts has a ban on fireworks. You can’t buy any in the state and it’s an offence to set them off (though not many are prosecuted). That’s why you needed to be a certain distance off shore from Cape Cod, which (as you know) is in Massachusetts.

When I lived near to Boston, l was 40 mins from Rhode Island where you could drive and buy fireworks from every supermarket.

I now live in Vermont, 1 mile from the New Hampshire border and as soon as I drive over the river and into NH there are three very large fireworks “shops” within 2 miles of crossing that are open all year round.

When I lived in Florida, every major junction had a huge marquee put up 4 weeks before 4th July and NYE all selling fireworks in a large cage inside the marquee.

But the gorilla wasn’t born in Chester zoo, as per the question.
Yanks and Brits often name people and things differently so in this case any Brit is going to associate fireworks with 5th November automatically. Not every Brit will know the significance of the date 4th July either, there’s plenty of us bad on dates who can’t name St George’s Day for instance. I mean why should we give a fuck about Independence Day.

Technically the question should have been “The talking gorilla Koko was also called the Firework Child by Americans …”.

I know that I don't associate fireworks and the 4th of July
I was in Boston, LA and Seattle on different 4th July celebration days ( over 30 Years ago mind you) and I never saw one firework.

Most people should know Amercian's have no concept of Nov 5th as its a purely British thing. You didn't need to know anything about July 4th really to know a Gorilla born in San Fransisco was not going to be named after Nov 5th in Britain when July 4th was an option.

Defo seems to vary state by state. I've spent numerous july 4th's in Michigan and there were fireworks everywhere.

My mums birthday was 4th July so I was always a bit more attuned to its significance. My wife's b/day is St Patrick's day & daughter's is New year's eve so I've got no excuse for forgetting them. Keep forgetting my son's though...

Saw the ep, she was a dim woman anyway with the other questions so not giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Pressure under the lights? Personally I think having Nov 5th as an option was a bit unfair especially if the chaser has answered quickly and the contestant panics and goes with the brain’s initial reasoning.

I'd like to see the questions written on paper. It always appears the closer the contestants get to the prize the harder the questions get.
And if they go big then there's a different, harder set of questions whipped out. And have yer noticed that Bradley reads the questions a little slower when it's the Chaser's turn. Bastard trick! And I noticed this week that Clive read out one more question to one competitor compared to another. WTF.
