The Citizens

shows the age for some of the posters on this forum, citizens is part of the mancunian history of our great club, ie citizens of manchester, unlike some from trafford, citizen means a native of, or inhabitant of a city or town, hence the song "the only football team to come from manchester"
with the good times hopefully on the way may i suggest some of our younger supporters read up on our great history which started long before the scousers and as for the red shite if it wasn't for us they would have no history, read and learn so in days to come you can quote events and not be called johny come lately's.
one of my favourites is utd won fuck-all from 1911 to 1948 = 37 yrs and won naff all, and no they didn't win the two world wars either ! BELIEVE me utd fans don't know their history and it soon shuts them up when you start to tell them what they should know.

Very well said. We are the 'Citizens of Manchester' as we are the only football team to come from Manchester. Like n62 says, brush up on all of our history you young ones, so you can ram it down the redshites throats.

The ciizens nickname was widly used in the 50s and 60s but our original nickname was The Brewerymen, which would suit loads of fans now.

Always been listed by the club as our official nickname for as long as I can remember. Admittedly, very few City fans actually use it although it appears quite frequently in the Thai and UAE press (presumably because their knowledge of the club comes from Wikipedia)

Always been "The Citizens" for me......ever since my first game in 1968......Can't abide it when we are refferred to as the Sky Blues...

We even have a MCFC Supporters club 7 a side team here in Perth WA........called.... "The Citizens"

Nico in Perth

We've had lots of odd nicknames over the years... Gortonians, Ardwickites, Brewerymen, Hyde-roaders (and later Maine-roaders!), the 'Cits', Mancunians, Citizens, Cambridge Blues and so on.

Most of these were used by the press rather than fans. Fans tended to always say they are going to watch City.

The earliest that I think City fans did actually use was the "Cits" (late 1890s) but it's hard to know for certain now (and was it a hard C or a soft C?).

Sky Blues was most definitely our nickname before Coventry - Coventry changed from stripes to all sky blue top as a result of a director who was impressed by our fighting spirit in the 1955 final (down to 10 men). When Jimmy Hill became the Coventry manager he established "Sky Blues" as their name, or even brand!

Their growing use of it reduced ours, and we focused more on Blues.

Both Citizens and Sky Blues were popular during the 30s-early 60s I would say. Perhaps Mancunians would be our best nickname going forward?

I personally want to focus on using "City" and re-establish ourselves as City so that anyone hearing the name only ever thinks of us.
