The come on Arsenal thread?

Doesn't really change my views this. In my opinion its still the weakest United team in years, but they still have quality to produce performances like this from time to time. As much as I dislike Rooney, you cannot deny his ability, he would get in Real's or Barcelona's teams no question. As for Nani, he's having a good game, but he'll be back to his old self soon.
I know what you mean about it being the worst rags team for some time... on paper. But look at the desire they have. No team in the league presses as much as the rags midfield. They do all the basics right, and have more determination than most teams. Look at us today... none of them could be arsed closing down the opposition, whereas every Arsenal player has 2/3 rags swarming around him within 3 seconds of getting the ball. They don't have as good a squad as some others, but they are a better team, begrudgingly.

That mentality, determination and desire is something that has been drilled into United teams down the 20 years Ferguson has been there. He's imprinted that into the club.

we're miles away from being as consistent as they are - one off games we can match them, but not the tempo they play at match after match

Takes some time.. We will get there

These things take time, United have had a big head start on us. I know Hughes got mocked alot on here for stressing the time factor, but it is valid. United have had their mentality instilled in them for over 20 years. Thats why their consistently up there challenging, even when their squad is not as strong on paper as it was last season. I'm not saying at all we should have kept Hughes, or I'm having a pop at Mancini, but I would like to see stability at City, and hopefully Mancini will be given time.

If we win both games in hand... just 2pts behind Arsenal (and they have Chelsea coming up)... possible? Never say never, one of our games in hand may prove to be a banana skin though especially if we don't up the tempo a bit compared to today. But here's hoping. If we could steal 3rd, we'd avoid that qualification game in the Champions League.

Doesn't the team finishing 3rd have to play one qualifying round, whilst the 4th place team have to play 2? Could be mistaken here; never felt the need to get clued up on CL qualification before!
