| Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove has admitted "regret" over a sharp rise in the number of children living in temporary accommodation - up from 70,090 in the first quarter of 2012 to 145,800 at the end of last year. Mr Gove said there are "several interlocking issues" at play, but that "the biggest issue overall is that whether it's in the private rented sector, the socially-rented sector or homes to buy, we still need to increase the supply of homes now". While the Government "has done a huge amount", he said, "we need to do even better in the future" to tackle the "increasing pressure on housing supply". While the Government has missed its 2019 manifesto target of building 300,000 new homes a year, he said, "we've hit the 1m over the course of a Parliament target". |
| Freezing free school meals threshold sees 135k children lose out |
| Research conducted by the Liberal Democrats based on Institute for Fiscal Studies data has found that the Government's failure to increase the household earnings limit for free school meals eligibility has seen an estimated 135,000 children lose out. Families in receipt of Universal Credit are only eligible for free school meals if their household earnings from work are under £7,400 - a threshold set in April 2018 that has never been increased, and which would have risen to around £9,400 if it were linked to inflation. Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Munira Wilson said: "Extending free school meals to these children would save parents money, encourage healthy eating and give children the energy to learn in the afternoon." |
| Migrant care workers 'punished twice' with deportation threats |
| An investigation by the Observer and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism has found that thousands of migrant care workers - many of whom have paid thousands to recruitment agencies - have been threatened with deportation by the Home Office after it took enforcement action against rogue employers. The investigation found that in 2022 and 2023, the Home Office cancelled 3,081 certificates of sponsorship, with 94% of decisions being due to the revocation of their employer's right to sponsor workers. Charities and unions have warned that workers who are already vulnerable to exploitation are being "punished twice". Unison general secretary Christina McAnea said the Government "asked migrant care staff to come here. So it's only right when things go wrong and staff lose their sponsoring employer, they get help to find new work and longer to secure support for a new visa." |
