The Conservative Party/Government

A report from the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Select Committee has warned that the UK's "failing" electoral registration system risks disenfranchising as many as 8m voters at the next general election. Committee chair Clive Betts said new voter ID requirements have been "tacked onto a Victorian-era system which is failing voters, political parties, and election officials". Giving evidence to the committee, the Electoral Commission had warned that if a general election were called today, "around 14% of the eligible population would not be able to vote". "In the year of a general election", Mr Betts said, "this is a damning indictment of the UK's electoral registration arrangements and a threat to the rights of British voters."

Damnng indictment or Tory policy?
