The Conservative Party

Northern poverty is worse for the obvious reason: there’s a whole lot more of it.

Seriously, it's easier to be poor in the north - in two senses. A greater proportion of the population in the north is deprived, but stuff is more expensive in the south (so the poor have less disposable income). Rochdale and Hastings both have over 20% of the population income-deprived. Even where it's a lower proportion, would you want to be the only poor person in the village? (No local shop, not much public transport) Let's pick wealthy Wokingham (famous on here for its Brexiteer in the Dog and Dart) - a pensioner in a rural part of the borough might have to get two buses (the first leg a bus every 3 hours, via a different town) to get to the Council offices to, say, get a bus pass (and don't miss the bus back).

But politically, it's not going well. The MP for Hastings wants an extension of HS1 along the Sussex Coast, and asked Johnson about it at PMQ. He just couldn't say it was a non-starter, not when we're still waiting for the much-delayed Rail Plan that will say whether they're completing the HS2 leg to Leeds, let alone the east-west Northern Powerhouse Rail. So he burbled as usual. "My hon. Friend is a fantastic advocate for the people of Hastings and Rye, and she has made the case to me before for the improvement to transport that she recommends. I know that this particular extension is being reviewed by the Department for Transport right now, and a decision will be made in due course. I am told that I simply cannot anticipate that, but what I can say is that this is the Government and the party that is absolutely determined to level up across our country with better infrastructure, superb innovation, and better skills across the whole of the UK."

I presume that this "missing" evidence will be stored in a cloud or server? He can't be hiding evidence ( perverting the course of justice ) to avoid evidence that he has perjured himself surely?

They've all started parrotting "level up" every time they open their mouths, the manipulative bastards, even when totally inapplicable like in this example. They know full well that their average voter's political understanding doesn't go beyond three words any more.

It was Henning Wehn who recommended living in a Tory marginal seat as "you get lots of free stuff". He lives in Hastings.

Once they find a way to subvert justice they keep on using it.

Mmmm, not sure it is better to be poor in a poor area or a rich one. I suspect it is always better to have wealthy neighbours, and hence available jobs, functioning local services, good schools and so on. Obviously, being poor is pretty crap everywhere. Rural places in the North don’t always have decent transport or loads of shops either.

Transport is a huge issue all over the country, outside of London. The merits of HS2 is a separate issue but for non-London day to day transport I don’t think there’s much difference between North and South particularly. Hastings will always have relatively poor public transport because it is a small town quite a long way from anywhere else. It’s just not economic to build massive infrastructure in such places. That’s different to the West Midlands or the North West where there are pretty much continuous urban areas of 5-6m people. If the government can’t find money to connect Leeds to HS2, it’s not going to find the money to connect Hastings (which is less than a tenth of the size) to HS1.
