Its easy really - you damage the economy so badly that firms go bust. That has two effects. One is that those firms that had been looking at hiring but instead go bust means those vacancies disappear. Two is you create unemployed people who will apply for those vacancies that remain.

Given the parlous state of Wetherspoons and its financial problems, maybe it’s a more accurate barometer of the state of the nation than he thinks, but for an entirely different set of reasons than the ones he believes.
