If it were about housing costs, they could eradicate that by processing claims before they reach the U.K.. This would also stop the boats and smuggling gangs.

Given that net migration was nearly 700k last year, and that there are something like 3-4 million people on housing waiting lists in the UK, asylum seekers would make a relatively minor difference.

The biggest impact with asylum seekers is the time it takes to process claims, when they do have to be put in social housing, because the majority aren't allowed to work.

Of course, the biggest issue with asylum seekers, is that the Tories see it as a wedge issue, so improving the system to the point where it has minimal impact on society, is not in their interest.
