Minister's 'regret' over doubling of children in temporary housing |
Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove has admitted "regret" over a sharp rise in the number of children living in temporary accommodation - up from 70,090 in the first quarter of 2012 to 145,800 at the end of last year. Mr Gove said there are "several interlocking issues" at play, but that "the biggest issue overall is that whether it's in the private rented sector, the socially-rented sector or homes to buy, we still need to increase the supply of homes now". While the Government "has done a huge amount", he said, "we need to do even better in the future" to tackle the "increasing pressure on housing supply". While the Government has missed its 2019 manifesto target of building 300,000 new homes a year, he said, "we've hit the 1m over the course of a Parliament target". |
