Is there a shortage of people applying to drive trains?
There's no shortage of applicants.

It's more HR influence as most "don't fit the culture."

There's plenty of internal and external applications everytime they come up. They pass the mechanical and psychological tests and are failed on bs like 'You didn't say the right words in the AI video interview."

So we're getting candidates who use company buzzwords to pass the interview who then struggle to complete the training.

Also, because of the competitive salaries some move to other companies that pay more as soon as they pass out. For example WMT drivers jump ship straight to Cross Country who accept them because they are fully qualified and only need traction and route training. They have huge issues with retention because of it.

If the training is free and an applicant jumps ship they should be forced to pay back their costs for training if they jump ship and don't complete say 5 years (Arbitrary figure for an example).
