Fair point. Instigating it is probably the wrong terminology. Not as a party, no, categorically not. The party's official position was one of Remain with the The PM fronting it. Which incidentally, given his unpopularity at the time was probably a contributing factor in why the vote was lost.
Sure there were more Tory MPs supporting leave than there were Labour MPs, and the question mark over Europe had divided the party for years. But Leave or even having a vote on it, was never the official party position. All blame lies at Nigel Farage's door.
That being the case, we'd have never had a referendum had Labour been in office (until they weren't) but that said, it's a pretty lame argument for me or anyone else to say "We should never have had a referendum because the people would vote in a way we don't want". The very essence of democracy is that the people get to decide, is it not?
I was one of the most vocal Remainers on here, before and after the referendum but even I came to the conclusion in the end that the fair democratic decision - albeit an idiotic one - had been made and we had to honour it.
I would say mismanaged might be closer to the truth if the official party position was as you say.
