The Craft Beer Thread

Not a fan of the hoppy ales, much prefer the dark malty ones, stouts and porters in small measures too.

I also love a good stout (or porter for that matter), although even they can be massively overworked. It's getting into dark beer season though. We have some cracking dark lagers over here.
Had nice bottle of Robbies Old Tom last night , lovely drink and very strong. I remember having a half on draft ( wouldn't serve pints) in the Sportsman Rest in Bredbury in the 80's - hated it !! Shows how your palate changes.
Anyone know any pubs that still do Old Tom on draft ??

The Castle on Oldham Street does, but it's not cheap. I would imagine the Britons Protection does too but I haven't been in for a few years.

Personally, I love the very hoppy ales.

Always have .... must be because I was brought up on Boddies (as it was) And still will go for a light, hoppy beer (Silver King, White Lion, Lakeland Gold, Old Golden Hen, and Manchester Bitter etc) in pubs.

And it is fantastic that almost every town in the States now has a 'Craft beer' bar or pub ..... looking forward to my next trip over there next month .... So good that don't have to just drink Bud Sprite etc ...

Those beers you mentioned are not 'very hoppy' by American standards. I enjoyed a well-hopped British golden ale as much as the next man, but the 8-9% triple or quadruple-hopped IPAs and APAs that are all the rage in the US are too much for me most of the time.

Totally agree on your second point though. Pretty much every place we went in Chicago had at least three or four decent beers (often 10 or 12) to choose from. We even got a half-decent beer at an NHL game, which was surprising as I've only ever encountered total piss at sporting events in the UK.

Few of my mates going to this

If your ever in the lakes try the strands inn at Wasdale, they make some great beer

I could drown in the beers available up there mate .... it's nirvana ...

My first beer after the Spurs game on Saturday was a Double Hop in the Hole In t' Wall, Bowness-On-Windermere. Took the family away to the Lakes for four days round the game and will try to do this as often as possible. I now live for good beer/craft ales... hope my wife and the good Sheikh aren't reading this?
