The damage done by 20 year's inferiority to Man United

GDM has nailed it.
When the fake Ronaldo left United, all sorts of stories emerged which had been hissed up during his timer there.
Not least was an incident at a Munich anniversary service held internally at the stadium (possibly the 50th anniversary or the year before?), with survivors, families, ex-players, VIP guests and the media. Wayne Rooney was one of the speakers, I believe.
As the service was in full swing, it began to run a little late. Rooney was sitting there when Ronaldo strolled up to the window from outside, started hammering on the glass, shouting to Shrek and pointing at his watch.
He and Rooney had something on, apparently, and the ladyboy was not best pleased at being kept waiting.
He did this several times, causing growing disgust, consternation and even anger from those in the room.
Now, given the unbelievable shit City were getting around this time about disrupting the minutes' silence — weeks before the fucking game was even played — you would have thought such a disgraceful show of disrespect for the Munich dead would have been plastered across the back pages. After all, to do otherwise would be the most craven hypocrisy.
But no. Apparently the press pack got together and collectively "decided not to take attention away from the importance of the service" and didn't write a word. Only once he left, and United were happy for him to now be portrayed as a spoilt, disloyal villain of the piece, did the story finally make it way into print
Does anyone honestly think that was their true motive? Cowardice of the wrath of the drunkard, fear of being banned and, yes, a bias, conscious or otherwise, at criticising 'such a great club on such a sad day' are all much more likely to be the main motivating factors.
As the old joke goes, just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean that people aren't trying to kill you . . .

What's your source for that?

I completely understand what you're saying OP but I think your point is only valid with regards to those that post on this forum. I think because literally everything is discussed over and over again on here, you get people obsessing with other obsessives. The internet seems to generate alot of momentum for conspiracy theories e.g. 9/11 inside job etc.

However, If I talk to the blues amongst my family and friends who are the same age as myself (25), who have a healthy hatred for anything rag and who have never posted or read anything on this forum, even they'd probably roll their eyes and tell me to shut up if I repeated half the shit that gets obsessed over regarding 'media bias' on here.
you're probably right to be honest. My mates are mainly around 40 and their views are totally different to what seems sometimes to be the majority view on here. The anger at ex players, the rage at the media etc. controversy rises to the top on forums I suppose.

Yeh I think you've got to factor in the fact that this forum is hosted in the distorting hall of mirrors that is the Internet. Good OP.

Admittedly I'm biased at the tender age of twenty-four, but I find City fans who grew up with failure are those who I'd rather be in the company of. Stoic, resilient and can find fun and humour anywhere, as we had to in those dark days. Meanwhile, it's the Main Stand moaners from Maine Road, aged 40+, now sitting in CBL3 and EL3, who are the most miserable, complain about everything and who I'd rather avoid.

I've always found that the older generation are more paranoid and insecure about the rags. My Dad's 50 odd and he's as bitter as them come, whereas I'm not really bothered about them. Just my experiences though.

Thinking of anyone in particular?

Yeh but isn't there a difference between having that dry sense of humour and being able to laugh at ourselves, on the one hand, and being obsessive and permanently feeling oneself in someone's shadow on the other. I'm similar age to you (26) and I honestly never thought I'd see a City team like this one, as I'm sure did you. I'm not going to say I don't care about United, because I obviously do, but I never thought of City as being inferior (except in the obvious sense of being shit at football.) Isn't DD's point mainly about having a positive identity as City, rather than a negative identity (i.e. defined in opposition to something else.)

EDIT: That's not very coherent. I think you're right that moaners tend to be older. There was an old woman who used to sit behind us in the Kippax who I swear never enjoyed a game in her life. Everything any City player did (especially any black player, incidentally) wasn't good enough. But DD's point isn't about moaning it's about being obsessed with another club rather than our own.

I don't disagree with most of what you've posted, GDM. But we've just knocked the old twat off his perch. He's looking like Brian clough now. The time for fear and insecurity has passed.

We are the big story now. It really doesn't matter if we have 100 unsold tickets for Ipswich away.

The time for fear and insecurity will only fully pass, at least for some of our supporters, when his undue influence goes the same way.

But as you say, that time is coming :-)

Great post DD. Rags know that we are the real deal and not just a flash in the pan, its going to be a real battle this season.

The identity of being a City fan for me is being loyal and humorous. In that, we've always been amongst the best in the country. THE best probably. I don't think that's under any threat whatsoever. The two funniest seasons I've had as a City fan have been the past two seasons.

They're not just like Chelsea though are they? If it was Chelsea who had dominated for the past 20 years we wouldn't have the same "paranoia", but because they're our local rivals, our derby game, we focus on what's happening with them nearly as much as we do with City, and that's got nothing to do with their status or the way they've dominated English football for 20 years, we do it in the same way that Sheffield Wednesday fans look at Sheffield United and Newcastle look at Sunderland.

There are a lot of people on here who go way over the top but I genuinely believe that the likes of Sky, the Sun, etc will show/write/print more pro-United articles because they know there are more United fans than fans of any other English club and realise their products/services will sell better with a pro-United slant. This isn't to say United are exempt from criticism or negative press though.

Your spot on with what you say here and whilst media outlets like Sky, the Sun, the FA, the premier league, UEFA and commentators give a media slanted bias that favours united they will continue to reap the financial rewards. FFS the premier league trophy on Sky still has the balck and red ribbons on when it flshing across the screen before they show a replay of the action.

twenty four? I bet you think a few dour performances under Pearce were the 'dark days', eh?

You were shitting green when my generation were demonstrating outside the main stand every week. You were still collecting conkers when we were trekking to brentford and gillingham.
