The Darkest Day - 20 years today

I was in the middle of the Stoke End on that awful, sickening day. There were Blues everywhere in the stadium but lots left after the wave of fighting around the stadium just after kickoff. The mood amongst the City fans was totally different to the mood amongst the Stoke fans, who booed their team off. The City fans moved into "We'll Support You Ever More" territory but make no mistake, everyone was in utter desperation. There was no anger, just disbelief.

On the way back to Manchester, in the car, we were all totally silent for the entire journey. I actually felt sick. As someone said above, to me the lowest of the low points was when Gillingham went 2-0 up. But the end of this game was close to it.

We were in the City end. The atmosphere was strange but definitely defiant. It wasn't the stunned disbelief of the Luton game: we knew matters were out of our hands.

I found the aggression of the six-toed mob something of a distraction as we had to work out how to get back to our car alive. We were parked near the railway station so opted for the bus but I can remember being sat on that for quite some time outside the ground watching the local animals using the building site still adjacent to the stadium as an armoury.

I agree it was dark but there was still a definite party feeling in the crowd. We played better than we had all season. "Are you watching Macclesfield"

The whole Stuart Pearce season was much darker for me. Going to the match out of some twisted sense of duty. A truly joyless season, something i loved became a real chore. This Pep side was beyond our wildest imaginings.

I agree with this "Going to the match out of some twisted sense of duty".

I cant explain it, Its the reason I stay till the end.

Its not about the players its not about the owners its about City whatever that mean

I was there, a memorable day for the wrong reasons but it would not have been city if it wasn’t that way. If I remember rightly the rags won the league that day.

In the City end thanks to a mate who managed to get his hands on a couple of tickets. My misses was ready to give birth to our first daughter and was obviously over the moon that I was heading to Stoke with no way of getting hold of me.
Ran the gauntlet of missiles (from both sets of fans) back to the car to find all but one window put it in. After a windy drive back home I thought "Ah, she won't mind me going for a pint afterwards". I walked into the house sometime after midnight and couldn't have been more wrong. She was not a happy bunny.
That one game probably, and looking back, quite rightly, cost me thousands in the following 12 months.
