The Darkest Day - 20 years today

I was there that day.

Played really well, blues all over the ground and getting out of the car park after the game was something all those there will never forget.

Great days to be a blue though who loved away days despite the obvious downs of relegation.

Think I watched it in the Hanging Gate in Audenshaw.

I remember there was a special TV programme featuring James H and possibly Dennis Tueart the day after (North West Tonight production)

Losing 2-1 to Birmingham that season was one of the darkest that season for me. Wasn't at the game, it was just the way the game went which summed up supporting City in those days plus the pain of going to work on the Monday.

i was there, in their Main stand. There were fourteen of us all sat together and when the goat scored to put us one up after 31 minutes we all went up and it kicked off to some tune. we fought our way down the steps to the pitch and ran towards our end. i side stepped two coppers but another one got me and threw me out. There were loads of us outside and we tried to watch the rest of the game from one of those open corners at the Britannia. The ground had only just been built and after the game the stoke mob were picking up rubble and half bricks that were still there from it being built and launching them at us. I remember the only chance you had was to watch the sky and move away form all the shit they were throwing at us, people were getting hit with rocks all over the place, it was absolute mayhem. One of the halcyon days, only we could score five away from home and still get relegated!

I was in our end and couldn't believe we'd gone down after such a great performance.
I was on the coach and it took ages for the police to clear the locals so we could escape. Stoke were down as well but Vale were safe and I'm told it kicked off big style in Burslem when celebrating Vale fans returned after their game.
They may be a bunch of knuckle-draggers but it's a lot bloody nearer than Palace, West Ham or South-fucking-hapton.

I was working nights onboard the ship so I had a few hours sleep and woke up to follow events on sky sports which we got onboard. I had a tv in the cabin and lay in darkness, still half asleep watching the scores updates. Totally gutted then had to get up to do my 12 hour shift. After being in the mess room having something to eat for a few minutes a group of the lads came in, stood in a line all wearing black armbands they had made the bastards lol!

In the corner a group of plastic rags were taking the piss so I got up and confronted them. I said I would take stick off any one of them that had been to old Trafford. Silence, not one. I then said the same, the provision being any one who had actually seen united play live. Total silence. The whole mess room was watching. I said, " I follow my team everywhere and have been to old Trafford and seen united play live more times than you lot put together. I have a season ticket and I will have one next year and will still support them if we are playing in the bloody Sunday league! That's what being a football fan is about, not watching it on the box glory hunting you rag c*****s!!!" The whole mess room stood up and cheered except for these sheepish muppets who then looked like I felt inside, sick.

Dark days I hope we never suffer them again.
Amazing!!

Not only was this the darkest memory of my time watching City, but also something not mentioned so far, the last match for Georgi Kinkladze. I was amongst the Stoke fans for this game surrounded by many undercover City fans. Spent the whole time listening to the inevitable results coming in on the radio and hoping Joe Royle would get Kinkladze on the pitch, if anyone can remember, he’d been in Amsterdam sorting out his transfer to Ajax and flew in late for this match. An awful day and I always recall not speaking to anyone at work on the following Monday. Finally, someone who didn’t know me that well said sorry about the City relegation. There was a deadly hush as the office expected me to explode in rage for daring to mention the football! I controlled myself and fought back the anger and just nodded. It took weeks to get over the relegation. No it took a year!
