The death of Irish football

Let's be honest. How can we expect anything when our team are lucky to even make a relegation certain prem squad.

The team is awful. No manager can do anything with that lot.

Maybe 5 years from now we'll see Byrne and Grealish change it on the field, but it's unlikely.

Yeah I agree with this, I said it at the time when they were talking of redeveloping Lansdowne we would have been far better off investing the money in developing our young footballers, whether that be through reopening the regional training centres and running them on a professional basis or incentivising the league clubs to build and run decent academies.

Shadz69: "Agree with Leighton but can I just add Steven Naismith is a ****. He was bad in Scotland but this evening he must have been in double figures for dives though it takes a special kind of **** to dive and when the ref buys it start screaming for a card. A thoroughly dislikeable little ****."

+ 1. Horrible little snide fucker. Full of elbows and snide digs as well as diving and screaming for cards. Needs a woman slap.

I'd have him at City.

Eire never beat Poland in the euros in 90/91 qualifiers when they were much higher ranked, 0-0 at home and 3-3 away, so I'm not sure whey it is expected now with Poland much improved. The one point off Scotland is the damaging blow, which means a home win against Germany and away win v Poland are needed, but very unlikely.

Its not that but maybe I am used to Ireland being competitive for the best part of 30 years even if we didnt quailify for a lot of tournaments. Euro 88 , World Cup 90 , 94 and 2002 and the last Euros in 2012. Its a shame as I look to the other sporting bodies in Ireland on a whole and the FAI have been professional longer than IRFU and GAA but sadly for Irish football the FAI are not as professional as the others. Hell even the IAB Boxing are more professionally run than the FAI. I look around and all i see is a load of GAA Cul Camps up and running. It would make you think what the FAI are doing with there money. If they had any sense they would hire former players and send them out to training camps during the summer to teach the kids to play football but that aint happening.
O Neill is clueless for this job. I would rather we had Brian Kerr in the job again or even David O Leary or Chris Houghton someone who will manage the young talent and bring them in. If you look at the players in this squad or not too far from it we are looking at players from mid table in PL to bottom and the championship level. We need to beg some players who hold dual Irish / or wherever passports to declare for us as we wont get the players at all. We need some players young players move away from England and play in a European team set up they might have more of a chance if they are technically a better player. I understand why they go to England but its the wrong move. Also our league is a shambles invest in the league and the youth football at all of the local Eircom league clubs make sure they have a proper youth set up. Yes it might take 20 years or more to unearth the new Keanes , Duffs , Brady's and Dunnes of this world but we done it before we can do it again.

As for Naismith yeah he was a twat diving whenever he was touched but he was smart enough to get the frees and it worked out for him. Ireland dont have a player like that we seem to be a more honest team but who knows what will happen in the remaining games football is a funny game at times.

Irish fans of the English league suggesting that young players should ignore the league that their elders are obsessed with and then saying there isn't enough investment in the Irish league despite travelling to watch the English Premier league week in week out. The irony of this one is astounding.

No more astounding than the thousands of English fans that leave their home towns and travel the length and breadth of the country supporting teams from different cities.
The league of Ireland is a shambles, crap football played in crap stadia with crap facilities and there is still a good chance you will get your head kicked in even nowadays. I'm from Dublin and used to go to different teams when younger and could,nt identify with any of em.Add in the violence and it just is'nt very appetising. I go to the very odd game now and sad to say not much has changed in 30yrs.

I completely agree. I've lived in Hull since I was 21 and can never understand why countless people attach themselves to United or Liverpool when they have no association whatsoever. The reason Hull can't fill their stadium is because half of the city have never had any loyalty to them because it's easier to follow the more fashionable Premier League. Ireland is the same but on a larger scale.

Hard to disagree with this. Haven't been to a Louth Derby in 3 seasons.

Surely the easy thing is to support your local side? I've heard the' but you're not from here' argument before but the vast majority of people support a side before they are old enough to have developed a local partisan stance and generally your team is your team for life, also where would you draw the line for support? The parish, the borough, the town, the city, the county.
I haven't a clue how I ended up with City but I know Blackpool, Leicester, West Brom, Peterborough fans I even know a Rushden and Diamonds fan so it isn't as simple as choosing a teams cos they are winning all before them.

aguero .I went to a few different Dublin derbies but I can only imagine Dundalk and Drogheda.lol.

Supporting your local teams haha. I went to a few Local derbies be it Pats v Rovers or Shels v Bohs and my god they can be nasty games at times its crazy. The standard of the football is shit here. Saying that any half decent player that the League of Ireland has produced has seen them being moved onto a team in the SPL or Championship so you cant blame the players wanting to move across but it effects our local game.
IF we had the teams who could afford a youth set up it would benefit the local game. Now more so than anywhere all the local junior teams are being tapped up for players all the time over here. Once the kids hit 15 to 16 countless Irish teens goes over to the UK for trials. There are some Junior clubs set up to get as many players they can over to the UK which is sad. IF anything they should be teaming up with the local league teams and moving them into the local leagues but the best players from here tend to be in the UK from a young age.
Irish sport fans do support local teams look at the GAA or Rugby teams they get a decent following also look at so many other sports and your seeing sell out signs for fights of all types so the fans are here the product sadly is the worst in Ireland. The FAI needs a total overhauld from top to bottom. This wont happen any time soon sadly.
