The Exodus has started

when someone chooses a team to support, then they can "unchoose".Like thousands of others i became a city fan through family ties, geography and for me seeing them lose to newcastle on the tele in the cup final. No divorce is possible(trial separation didn't work).Inevitably we will build a large number of choosers,it goes with the territory. Not all are glory-hunters,just discerning football fans,The Bluemoon shines on more than just Manchester

Aye, if you're a neutral watching any game, you usually will have a favourite. If it's the team that plays the best, that's your choice.

(I usually cheer on the underdog but tend to applaud all round whatever the result.)

If you're not already a fan of a specific club, buying a shirt of that favourite is just one step closer to "belonging" without actually becoming a real fan.

Likewise, having a new favourite is just convenient.

As a paedophile once told me "I support whoever's the best team"
