The FOC thread.

As a fully paid up member of the FOC club, I can remember the football pools. Pick eleven fixtures; if eight of them came in as draws, you were a winner. The final scores on grandstand even had the pools value on the end of the fixture. I'm assuming they're long since gone (been out of the country since late '82, so excuse my ignorance).

We'd have the same scruffy old bloke come to the front door every Thursday or Friday night collecting our pools entry and stake money.

I always wondered if he ever actually sent the entries and money to Llittlewoods or Vernons. Then... I got a paper round at our local newsagents. Every week I'd see the same scruffy old bloke come in with a fistful of pools entries and a bag of cash, and hand them over to the newsagent, apparently for collection by yet another intermediary who'd (presumably) take them to Liverpool.

We did win once (only about £12 iirc), so the process did work!

The house used to go silent when the results were being read, so Dad could mark his coupon.

I remember once when somebody else had to step in for James Alexander Gordon, and they couldn't get the inflection right, so that, for example,
Chelsea 1 - Arsenal 2
sounded to all the world as though it was going to be a score draw. This went on throughout all four divisions.

It was the only time I ever heard Dad say 'Fuck!' :-)

If I remember it right Littlewoods always had much bigger payouts than Vernons.

My Auntie won £100k on Vernon's pools and was interviewed on local radio. The interviewer asked her if she regretted not doing Littlewoods which would have won her £1m. To her credit she replied "I've just won £100,000, I don't regret anything"

£100, 000 would be worth a lot then. In the sixties you could buy a decent house for £4,000 or less. In the early 70s my first house, a small semi, cost me £2,400.

A small semi for a FOC is quite an achievement!!
