The FOC thread.

I was only thinking this morning, that there are very few people in this country younger than me, who can remember the pre-decimal money.

Sunday tea around 6pm, eating the remnants of Sunday Roast Dinner listening to "Sing Something Simple" on the Radio. Grandparents round our house, Dad finishing the last of the bread and butter with a chocolate digestive sandwich.

Grandparents went home, then out came the Tin Bath which was hung on the kitchen wall, Mum and Sister first, water boiled in kettle and saucepans on the gas gob, in front of the fire whilst me and Dad sat in the kitchen, then, in the same water, me and Dad in the bath. That was it for the week, just a "personal" stand up wash after that.

Kin freezing in winter, no heating, just a coal fire, started by rolling up newspaper into a coil, then some kindle followed by coal, lit it all and put the tin plate (can't remember the name) flush to the wall and a couple of broadsheet newspaper pages over the top to get the fire roaring.

God we were poor looking back but my childhood was so happy with such a loving family.
I’m late to this thread but 4 or 5 posts in has bought it all back to me especially yours hammo, you’ve basically described our house when we moved from Ashton under lyne to Salford I think it was 1966 I was 6 years old and remember the first day all sat on milk crates eating fish and chips. I guess we were waiting for the furniture to arrive from the old house or maybe that was the fuckin furniture I can’t remember.
I can however remember me mam bathing me in the kitchen sink haha how fucking poor were we, anyways great reading these old tales of poverty but I think simple happiness.

Who remembers Kellogg's Rise and shine orange juice drink? This was cracking for a hangover. I used to take a pint glass full of it to bed after a night out, waking up to drink it when my mouth felt like the inside of a flip flop. You had to remember to take a spoon with you to stir it though or the powder settled at the bottom. Great stuff, sadly discontinued.
Me dad worked for them in Trafford park
Suffice to say we never went without at breakfast plus we had boxes of that stuff.

Must have been one of the biggest causes of house fires BITD. Especially when phones became common. Go to answer the phone and forget about the chip pan!
Came home pissed one night after the then Mrs had fucked off for the umpteenth time
Stuck a pan of chips on and fell asleep watching match of the day, the smoke woke me up I managed to put the chip pan out but the kitchen was burned to fuck especially as we had those polystyrene times on the ceiling. Best part of this story was we had sold the house so me and the brother in law had to re decorate the whole kitchen and remove the smoke damage from rest of the house. The future owners called in announced a few times to measure up, I just made excuses saying I wasn’t well. The kitchen was only half done when they came
We’ve never decorated a kitchen as quick as we did that week.
Chip pan got binned after that.

Technically speaking, once the sale contract is signed, the buyer is responsible for insuring the property. (England)

Who can remember the first LP they bought?
I can’t recall the title of mine but it was a skiffle album by Lonnie Donegan.
Rock Island Line and the rest . About 1961
Marvin gaye what’s going on bought in 75
Think it came out earlier.

Did the Mrs get binned off?

Mine was Hot Buttered Soul by an up and coming guy called Isaac Hayes. It’s stood the test of time too as I still listen to it - contained only 4 songs and 2 were cover versions of Walk On By and By The Time I Get To Phoenix, and they’re as superb now as they were back then.
Just listened to the phoenix song which is one of my favs, that is a great take on that song enjoyed it.
