The FOC thread.

I always have a chuckle at the complaint that it’s heat or eat. In the 50s, we never had heating. Most families had one fire in the front room which was never lit before tea time. We all remember frost on the inside of bedrooms.
I was 20 years of age the first time I went into a house with central heating.
Imagine putting on a few more layers at least they aren’t outside on the street.

For some reason the café going fraternity of today think we had it easy, weird take on life and one that needs educating out of them.
They are just so entitled. You can't make them understand that we had to save for a mortgage, have no foreign holidays, accept second hand furniture, have an old banger of a car. Buy a house, then start to earn a bit more, sell the house and move up the property ladder.

If they stopped having weekends in Dubai/ Barcelona/ NYC, being covered in tatoos, stop spending a fortune on personal grooming and new lease cars, maybe try saving up then perhaps, just perhaps they could afford a house.

Nb not all of them, ours saved for a house, we were able to help and whilst they didn't live in penury, and enjoyed life they knew how to save.

I nearly choked on my boba extra light reading that. How can we expect to understand a generation who don't know where their next apple phone or macbook is coming from.

Outside loos and chipping ice of the windows inside? Pullleeazze :)

Rising Damp, comedy genius. Steptoe and son, love thy neighbour, later Budgie, the Sweeney and one of my all time favourites Auf Wiedersehen Pet.
Budgie - I had a Budgie jacket like Adam Faiths - bought it in Bolton c&A spring 1971.

I didn't do The Sweeney being a girly, but hub used to watch it with his dad and I've seen some of the repeats and enjoyed them - the nostalgia factor!!

Auf Weidersehn was fab, we had a video recorder by 1983, so we used to watch after a night out in the pub. Oh such Happy days, although I absolutely hated the Government at the time, had friends who were married to miners and I saw the effect of the government action had on people and communities.

"See you Budgie"..... The Scottish villain Charlie Endell played by the actor actor Iain Cuthbertson. Menacing.

The Sweeney was decent and later the Professionals. I almost forgot another classic, Minder. The chemistry between Dennis Watermark and George Cole was superb.

Video recorders, they were like magic when they first came out. I was living at my mum and dad's in Wythenshawe at the time . I had been in the merchant navy since 1974 so had plenty of disposable income . I remember buying my very first one from Curry's, a National Panasonic for £550 cash, a huge amount of money back then. That was without remote control too! The salesman nearly dropped through the floor when i said i was paying cash and even came to our house to fit it and explain how it worked. He must have got a nice commission lol.
Auf Wiedersens first series started and finished when I was away at sea for five months. Luckily for me my parents taped them all as they knew id love it and I did. Binge watched them when I got back. The reason I loved it so much was because every character reminded me of somebody id worked with onboard ships. Also that unique camaraderie that exists when a group of blokes live together in challenging conditions. Superb. Happy times.

They were indeed. Our first vid from Curry's in the Arndale, £499 October 1981. If we wanted a remote extra £100! We saved up work exes and overtime from earlier that year. The video revolutionised our life. However it did let me down Boxing Day 81, instead of recording our 3-1 win at Klanfield ( I was at the game, had a scouse bf at the time), got home next day to find itv had been recorded! Early technology and trying to programme was hit and miss!

I hope your cash flush days continued and bless mum and dad taping Auf Weidersehn for you, sort of thing mine would do. Me n scouse had our own house by then so my mum wasn't in situ to record motd for me that night.

BTW I did not marry the scouse, but that's another life episode entirely :-).

We loved Minder, it was fab.

I enjoyed the Professionals too, early 80s Martin Shaw was easy on the eye....

Yes I did I remember Dusseldorf well, I go back to Germany 3 times a year just to keep my arm in.
It's a lovely country. I like the German work ethic too.

I nearly drowned once in a choppy sea; I have my continued life courtesy of a German who braved the high waves to save me.

I've never been in the sea since....
