And we also managed to get into the Free Trade Hall once, after it had closed....loved going to gigs there, and we were curious to see it one more time before it was demolished.......found all manner of old stuff in there. Old gig tickets and a few posters from long gone concerts. Cool to see it, though that did feel very spooky in there......not one to really beleive in ghosts, but it did feel like there was something/someone watching us in that place.....got spooked and got out sharpish then, lol

Probably the ghost of Lou Reed's credibilty... Remember him running off the stage screaming around 1973/74? A fan got on the stage and Lou legged it to the wings - His 'tough guy' image was shattered in an instant - He wouldn't come back on stage for ages, and then only did to avoid a full scale riot!

One of many FTH memories!

Just slightly before my time that. But had heard of it, lol
Started going to gigs there in late '74. Saw some great ones too. Lynyrd Skynyrd (twice) Queen (twice in one night) Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult (supported by Japan!) Thin Lizzy (several times) Be Bop Deluxe, Kraftwerk, The Tubes loads......always a cool venue with just students as 'stewards'....(apologies op for slight thread hijacking)

It was really eerie in there all dark and empty though. Especially in the bar area and in the main hall......

Were you able to get into the Lesser Free Trade Hall upstairs?

Nah, didn't get that far. Besides, it will still have been full with the 250,000 people that claimed to be there for the Sex Pistols gig......(Did see Crispy Ambulance play there once though, lol)

didn't I hear it was being considered as the "hub" for when the high speed rail line comes up here?

On the subject of the 250,000 people... I genuinely was one of the couple of hundred there that night. There's an easy way to find out if someone was there or not - It involves them knowing what lost item was found in the bar, who made the announcement about said item, and what was the general reaction when the announcement was made.

BTW - Among numerous wannabes who've been caught out with that one was Tony (career based on bullshit) Wilson, when I questioned his claim to have been at the LFTH gig - Because he wasn't there (lying rag bastard). He did accept a drink from me at the later Electric Circus Pistols gig however (well, he did get me in for free, so fair exchange).

There is the excellent book by David Nolan - ''I Swear I was There'' and I thought Wilson said he wasn't there at the first one, but was at the second.

Hucknall too is often accredited with being there but admits he saw them first at the Electric Circus.

You're right - TW did admit in interviews to being at the second gig, but only because he'd already been exposed as a bullshitter. Late 70's Hucknall wouldn't have been in any state to remember where he'd been - he was already too far up his own arse to notice anybody but himself.
