The grand strategy gaming thread

Civnet
Age of Empires: Rise of Rome
Medieval Total War
Caesar 3 + Pharaoh
Master of Orion

I can still enjoy the new games but i'll never be as immersed as i was into those.

Same with all the genres apart from FM really.

I also play OpenTTD fairly regularly as well - the open-source reproduction of Transport Tycoon Deluxe. That really is for the old schoolers. Available for free here for anyone who wants to try it out: http://www.openttd.org/en/
That's definitely something I will take a look at. I also had a lot of fun with TTD back in the days. That reminds me of another Open source rendition, Freeciv, that I used to play a lot on my Linux box. Think it was loosely based on the game mechanics of Civ 2. Had a quite decent AI as I remember.
And yes, In the Wake of the Gods which is a fantastic collection of mods for the classic Heroes of Might and Magic III (could that possibly be my all time greatest time-waster?) WoG takes that game and turn it into a whole new and delightful experience. Strongly recommended for all old-school HoMM fans.

I got the "Brave New World" expansion pack on Steam sale a couple of days ago. Really got Civ V up and kicking again. A good dose of new game concepts; Religion, Trade, more advanced Culture, Tourism and more. The game feels fresh, familiar but new. Recommended for all Civ heads who haven't got it yet. With this expansion the V version trumps IV as the all-time best Civ package IMO.

Love the thread....started out playing original civ...played warcraft on my parents dial-up connection back in the day, must have cost them a fortune!

These days I bounce around from game to game. Question I have for people out there, are there any remotely good strategy games for ipad/iphone? I have yet to find one that does the trick and most if not all of them want to connect to social media or have you buy stuff in-game, which I have no interest in. Would be awesome if there was a good strategy game for the phone.

Picked up Crusader Kings 2 on Steam over the weekend.

What a phenomenal game. It reminds me a bit of Minecraft in that it's initially obtuse and you have to make your own story and set your own goals so to speak but when you do there isn't a more rewarding game out there.

It's a seriously engaging and at times difficult game. I started off in Scotland and rose to become King of a united Scotland, taking advantage of the war for England between Harald and William the Bastard, grabbed the Isle of Man and got into Southern Wales through vassaling, became the Duchy of Lancaster through Holy War and grabbed Northumberland in a shock and awe type move.

Properly tough game but the narrative of making your own bloodline and dynasty and watching your sons fight over the crown is amazing.

There is a Civ game on IPAD it is lightweight compared to the PC but is a good way to kill a few hours particularly when travelling.
