I have just been invited to a meeting to discuss plans to build an Eruv over a 12 mile stretch of Hale. Now to my own embarrassment I did not really understand what an Eruv was until about an hour ago. But from what I can gather people seem annoyed by the idea while personally it seems something of nothing.

Can anyone Jewish or a bit more educated than myself give me a brief rundown as to any consequences if this happens?

Instead of telegraph poles and wires all over the place, how about a GPS based app which tells people when they are entering or leaving the eruv?

Good idea.

And if a physical boundary is needed then bits of grass or tarmac could make up the barrier instead of wires strung up in the air.

I don't mind churches, synagogues and mosques on private land but I don't want people of one religion staking out an area of town which is home to people of all faiths and none, and whose roads and public spaces belong to everyone, not just the residents of the area.

Certain things can be done within the home/town on the Sabbath and festivals but there has to be a physical barrier; however flimsy.
Like many other religious things it's symbolic (or symbollocks) if you prefer.
Essentially it's a get out clause for cheats, and one the orthodox who live within the Prestwich-Broughton eruv are taking advantage of.
It has absolutely zero impact on those of other faiths.

yes they need a eruv, like heald green needed a mosque, its essential that we embrace all cultures

and whilst we are at it, lets cordon off some land for the Muslims so they can teach young people how to make ieds and stone homos

How do you make a stone homo?

As my learned friend EL2 says.

It's an utter load of religious bollocks dreamed up by scholars to get round a problem they (or rather their predecessors) dreamed up hundreds of years ago based on a wide-ranging interpretation of a word or sentence in the OT. However there will be no or very little noticeable impact on anyone else. Possibly a few fences or posts with wire strung between them to cover any gaps in natural boundaries.

I apparently live on the road which is the northern boundary of the north Manchester eruv and I don't actually know what the physical boundary is. Nothing seems to have changed.
