The Kippax

Most of our first games were a loss, didn’t put us off though it prepared us for the tough times to come. City fans are a different bread.
Used to go in the Main Stand for my early matches at Maine Road with my dad, after that sat on the benches in the Platt Lane for a while.
First time I felt I was old enough (and maybe tall enough!) to stand on the Kippax we did indeed lose, got battered 3:0 by Arsenal. Can't say i remember much about the match apart from Liam Brady scoring a penalty for them! Actually come to think of it I do remember the aroma coming from the toilets by the wall where the turnstiles were...don't think that memory has ever left me!!,

What a stand!
Nothing like it.
Where Else would they put thousands of opposing fans separated by a single line of plod?
Oh the memories.
Aerial bombardments of Bottles of piss, darts, coins.
You staked a claim on your place and that was yours for evermore.
My 'place' was always about half/ two thirds of the way up as near to the halfway line as possible, great view . For some reason decided to stand near the bottom of the terrace at 'pitch level' with a (much taller) mate for my first Kippax derby. Result was good as we won 1:0 but the view wasn't as I completely missed Steve Mackenzie's winner as I seem to remember not being able to see over the kids sitting on the wall at the front. Last time I ever stood down there!!

Walking down the Kippax Tunnel, felt like walking in to a Roman Colosseum.

It made all the Hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, when you reached the end of the Tunnel, saw the Pitch, heard the roars of the Crowd, a sensory over load, the smell of Hot Dogs,Burgers,Bovril and cigarettes in the air.

i always enjoyed that experience,it was special.

Just thinking about it,brings memories all flooding back.

Evolving as Fan from being a Toddler sitting on the Wall with your Legs through the railings.Becoming a Man and standing with all the other Alpha Males next to the away fans in the Top Right Hand corner.

Not sure that your description of an alpha male would pass scrutiny by a zoologist sounds more like one of the pack.

Absolutely loved being on that terrace, the noise, the smell and falling down 20 steps when we scored. So glad I got to spend many many match days on there.

I've said it before on here. At a time in my life when, for various reasons, there were tensions between myself and my parents (and my sister, come to that), I desperately needed to get out of the house, and cycle miles away up to Moss Side. The Kippax was home. First girlfriend, I took her and showed her my ‘home’. She was a brave soul, when I think about it.

Did she go a 2nd time?
