Absolutely horrifying.

The news anchor doing his best to keep it together despite admitting his home is fucked as well. The Hollywood studios have just been told to shut down after another fire has been shown to have started.

Any blues affected stay safe.

I thought about posting this earlier, figured maybe people weren’t too bothered as it’s the US, however truly horrible

The pictures look like one of those disaster movies on the sci fi channel which is highly ironic as it heads to Hollywood.

They've just interviewed a man trying to protect his condo. He saved all his money to buy the place and doesn't want to lose it. If it's taken he will get in his car and take his two cats with him with no idea where to go as he has no one.

The Hollywood branch of the Official Supporters club is not too far away. I had a look earlier, and there are one or two isolated fires near them, but nowhere near as bad as the main seat of the fires which essentially straddles the hills around highway 27. I know the area quite well, and it really is well populated. Scary shit.

Most intense Santa Ana winds I can remember topped out in the 40 mph range with a few stronger gusts having lived down there a long while (12 yrs or so). But there were gusts to 80-100 mph this time so I read and upper level winds too so they came over the hills that normally protect north LA. More normally they are worst in the basin or Orange County where the vegetation in the built out areas is far sparser than the hills north and west of downtown. And thus far this winter So Cal has been bone dry while No Cal rainfall is well above average:

Just absolutely tragic.
 
Mr mrs sister’s mate lives there she’s told me they were told to evacuate with not much notice.

Their whole house has burnt to the ground with everything in it.

I can’t even process how it must feel to just lose your home and all your possessions like that. It’s more than just “stuff”, it’s your whole life.
 
One of my best mates from school now lives in South Pasadena and it’s been surreal and incredibly sad watching places I regularly visit when I see him and his family in Altadena and Sierra Madre go up.
 
At least five killed, millions in damage and a huge displacement of people. I know it's regarded as America and probably quite affluent, especially when you see the celebrity names being banged out, but it's a tragedy regardless and I would hope America puts vast resources behind limiting the damage right now.

Even the Hollywood sign it at risk now. Makes you wonder if China or Russia would be better off throwing away a cigarette than spying or sending up drones.

Personally can't imagine the threat of wildfire here in the UK reaching civilization. I know we have the occasional issue with careless campers and youths up near the moors and peak district bit nothing like this at all. Stay safe if you're anywhere nearby.
 
I was watching an LAX aviation site yesterday. Biden was in his helicopter with 5 support aircraft circling the fires whilst in the background a DC9 was dropping fire supressant. Sad for all involved.
 
How did the fires actually start? Is the weather currently hot enough to start fires, or were they domestic fires that have been caught by the wind? Half of the country was under some sort of arctic weather warning as well!

Also, fires in this area seem to happen every year, maybe not as bad as this, and you have horrific tornado damage in other areas. Do these areas ever get rebuilt fully, or do they still have properties lost to fire etc that remain untouched and likely to never be repaired?

I'm guessing many people don't have insurance for wild fire damage?

As you say it's hard to imagine but it's a terrible thing to have to go through no matter how rich or famous you are. This does seem to happen a lot over there but not on the same scale, maybe they need to think about building some kind of firebreaks although I suppose with 100mph winds fires can jump very far very fast. Let's hope they get them under control sooner rather than later and the number of casualties doesn't keep rising.
 
It’s not climate change, it’s just winter and there have been fires before.

This stuff is going to happen more and more, meaning huge displacement of people.


Hope as many can be saved as possible. It looks horrific.
 
It's a lot harder to feel for these celebrities taking all the media attention with them posting about their home being destroyed from the safety of their other mansion. Not saying they arent allowed to be devastated too but they'll be absolutely fine, it's the normal people that don't have a second home who have just lost their entire lives and probably have no ides where they'll sleep tonight that should be the focus.
