The LA Wildfires

It's true on the whole -- enormous forest resources here and in Canada have led to framing with timber. Lightweight, strong and easy to transport.

The area that has burned has a lot of stucco and tile exteriors, and roofing materials have moved away from wood derivatives for a very long time though (asphalt shingles are the significant majority of American roofs, and can be flammable but are also typically fire-treated).
The house I live in is timber framed, as are all the houses around here. They've just finished one down the street, and are just starting to knock up another one a bit further down. Discounting the foundations they're probably about 85 -90 % timber construction with cement render and composite tiles. I believe the OSB/Plywood panels have some sort of fire-retardant treatment, but I'm not sure how effective it is.

Fairly tightly packed in and lots of vegetation and dry scrub, but then in the summer months is tends to piss it down in the afternoons/evening at least once or twice a week. It's very rare it gets tinderbox dry although there have been a few smallish fires further in land.

China are at the forefront of renewable energy, they're also at the forefront of fossil fuels and selling the world shite that we all lap up.
China are also getting a free pass from the UN in so far as they need to do little other than continue to ask for handouts from other countries as designated a developing country FFS.

They along with India will continue to ensure that C02 emissions continue to increase per capita for many decades to come.

As far as Australia is concerned it wouldn't matter is we increased our emissions 4 fold in the next 100 years or so we we are not going to alter the climate one jot as our climate on earth is virtually totally dependent on what the Sun does as we contribute bugger all in terms of global emissions despite being a fossil fuel driven nation.

The switch to renewables will drive Australia in the dog house on a good day because the poor will get poorer in relative terms.

Many are already having to choose between , heating , cooling or eating and we have only just started our insane drive towards renewables.

Why we are still dormant on nuclear tells me how poor our politicians have become at reading the tea leaves.

How are Germany , Denmark and California travelling these days in terms of electricity prices compared to their near neighbors in France and Texas for example.

Bush fires in California in the winter on a large scale , blame it climate change (LOL) , but don't blame it on renewables , wokism and incompetence and some individuals that have a penchant to start fires.

Australia's rural and regional areas will be littered with wind farms and solar panels and batteries that won't keep the lights on when we need them on and already with only around 20 per cent on a good day when the wind blows and the sun is not blocked by cloud formation of electricity and very intermittent as best is generated from the cheap garbage we import for China while ensuring we pay higher prices for electricity at the consumer level with each passing day.

Currently already a third of our population live week to week to get by and our current energy policy is badly flawed.

Unless we go nuclear and produce more gas for local use as we ween off coal we will be cooked but not climate wise rather economically and socially and black outs like those in Texas recently will become the norm.

Man made Co2 has increased the average global temperature by around 1.0F in the past 100 years at best guestimates.

To date most of this has had a positive impact on the globe as a whole in relation to food production along with water availability the building blocks of all human existence. It's the distribution of this increased capacity to feed the world in a fair and just manner that needs adjusting.

I'd volunteer for euthanasia to save the planet in a heartbeat I've seen enough at 57!
Ideally the planet's population would be much, much, much less.
Don't rule out another plague that kills immense amounts.
That seems like the only thing that could save the human race as awful as that is.
If you think we're worth saving which every time I go on X I don't.
Overpopulation isn't the issue, it's overconsumption. In Africa, women are still giving birth to four and five children, but combined those five African children still won't consume as much in a lifetime as one child born in Europe or North America does in a year.

Once Uber Eats and McDelivery get a foothold, things will change for the better..

Seems 17 million cut from the fire department in LA, no water in the fire hydrants. Some fair criticism?

So wild fires are caused by wokism. Good to know.

The water in the hydrants thing no -- three three million gallon tanks drained in a hurry because of the massive size of the fire. Same thing happened with the Oakland fire. But I referenced the inability to fund brush inspection in n earlier post -- may or may not have been an issue in this case.

Ye id think there was water in there but it was used up, there may only have so many reservoirs locally to link in, looking at those fires and the dispersal it’s huge amounts of water, eventually it will run out in certain places.

Woke decisions result in making the outcomes of fire sucking up oxygen far worse than they would be otherwise , for example having a fire service in part based on DEI rather than the best people for the job.

People that get jobs based on who they are rather then what they do often make poor decisions in times of crisis.

While some probably have reveled if the bullet fired at trump had killed him and by no means am I a fan of Trump as a politician or human being for that matter what we saw in the immediate afterwards was far more than comical.

How have you personally concluded that the Fire Chief in question isn't suitably qualified for the job she was appointed to? Have you any evidence other than what is being reported by agenda fueled news media? Anybody faced with a crisis of this magnitude could potentially struggle under the immense pressure of the situation.

The term 'DEI hire" is more often than not used in a derogatory manner without those using it being in possession of the full facts.

When the fires first broke out it was dangerous to send planes up because of cross winds but how a fire can take hold that quick it’s frightening. I fell so sorry for those people losing everything total destruction and devastation over such a large area, that poor man with Parkinson’s walking down the road pushing his buggy

With increased risk during prolonged periods of dry weather and its impact on vegetation and resulting fuel loads parts of CA are always at risk of large scale wildfires all year round and its clear that the state as a whole was not and is not appropriately prepared to ensure the fire damage when fanned by strong winds was mitigated to avoid damage to homes and infrastructure on a significant scale.

The fact that loss of life to date is relatively small is a godsend.

Ecosystems are never static and you can never be complacent if you live in a region where fire will cause damage to property no matter how well trained and skilled the relevant authorities and personnel are.

A quest for renewable energy means more transmission lines are required and if erected above ground this naturally will increase the potential and often actual damage a wildfire or bushfire as we call them in Australia will cause.

I’d humbly suggest that if you think a fire crew - whether it’s an LAFD crew, a Cal Fire crew or, for that matter a British crew - would tolerate a crew member not being able to do their job for whatever reason, you’ve never spent time in the company of fire crews engaged in firefighting.

Hats of to World Central Kitchen and Jennifer Garner for aiding food to the people who were fleeing away from their homes.

For providing clean water because the main water supply was not only in extreme shortage but literally unhealthy to drink.

The Palisades is 122 sq.km with only one route to escape. The cars were gridlocked and many had to abandon their cars.
