Focusing on the “Farage issue” - as I see it using an attack line of “Farage is a racist” is that you have to convince those minded to vote for him that they themselves are racist - and good luck with that!! If people resonate with what he is saying they will vote for him, and the fact Reform draw votes from both former Labour and Tory voters (and other cohorts) means he is occupying that hallowed centre ground that wins elections. If you want to defeat him then drop the insults and tear apart the policies, drag him in to areas he doesn’t want to go. Right now he is controlling the main news agenda (immigration) and he’s in his comfort zone. It was the same approach with Brexit, it costs us £350m a week to be in EU, no it doesn’t it costs £xxm (whatever the remain campaign said) - that’s why they lost it, no one on remain side explained the benefits for that money just admitted it cost us money. Same with immigration, don’t talk about it in negative terms, extol the benefits, acknowledge the negatives and explain what long term plan there is to reduce our reliance on immigration (assuming we need to or can). Until then reform have this immigration debate all sewn up.

I think the promise to reduce immigration has long gone, they have lied for years, actually substantially reducing it is the only way you can get rid of Reform as a danger to the two main parties.

The government borrowed the least amount of money in three years last month, official figures showed?

Wow - that is massive news, or..........

Hmmmm, my memory is a bit foggy - who knows, perhaps there was some seismic event a few years ago that caused a big increase in borrowing - so perhaps it should be expected that the level of borrowing is declining????

Borrowing was expected to be double the figure expected, so half is pretty good news. still a long way to go of course.

From the end of July 2024 to the end of last month, the UK's national debt rocketed from £2.53trillion to £2.71trillion, the study of official figures found.

It means the Labour Government put Britain into the red by an extra £186.2billion in just 12 months.

The TaxPayers' Alliance analysis of newly-published figures by the Office for National Statistics found this represented a £6,510 increase in debt per household.

It was also a £5,880 increase in debt per taxpayer over 12 months, and a £2,726 increase in debt per person.

I was actually looking for the increase in new retail catering outlets (8% better this year than last though it's obviously a sector with a lot of "churn") but the number of startups generally is encouraging.

I stopped reading at the Taxpayers' Alliance. One of the Tufton Street mob. A "friend" of mine donates as he wants to see much lower taxes and services in the UK-he lives in Cyprus and also voted for Brexit!

The two reasons for this are the rise in employer NI contributions that kicked in during April and a higher monthly amount from self assessment income tax returns (this may however be just down to phasing of the returns).

If it's consistently less over the remaining 5 months of the year then its great news and looks like its getting under control. A one off outlier however is just that, an outlier. Lets hope its the former.

The demand for patience and time, whilst cute and frankly laughable given who they’re from on here, won’t wash I’m afraid.

Labour are in power, it’s on them. That’s how it was always spelt out.

When species become rampant they get culled and with good reason, humans are the only ones who can control their numbers, they prefer to rampage thru everything instead.

I'm not a fan of flags or flag shaggers on all political sides.

Don't particularly like them on union picket lines either.

They come across as a relic from bygone eras.

We're moving more and more to a society of my reality is right and you're automatically a **** for not agreeing to it.

Lost in a sea of disinformation and not being arsed to find the island of facts as it may challenge our opinions and beliefs.

I know I'm guilty of it more often than not.

This place can bring out the worst in me. I reckon some of the people I argue on here with i'd probably enjoy their company in real life because our lives are far more nuanced.

If only the world could be divided into knowing who's a good **** and who's a bad un' we'd all be on a better place.

There is approx 8 billion and rising that is a simple fact, neither doomsday or Logans Run just yet. Although the prequel did mention a Bob who years before said Whaddy gon a do? fuck it growth forever.

Normally the sane folk try to prevent things from actually happening. Its probably why the young are more ideological Its still their future I guess.

We go back and forth but it always comes down to you'll be gone so you don't really care.

World population is expected to peak at the end of this century then decline. Only Africa has a significant birthrate above the replacement rate and even that is trending downwards.

And right now, yes “what you gonna do?” How will growth manifest itself? Will AI fuel a productivity boom or is it a case of over promise and underperform? How do we beat the demographic time bomb and an aging and declining population worldwide? Can it be beat or are we delaying the day of reckoning until AI and technology can provide a solution?

Personally, I err on the side of optimism and going for AI and tech to provide the solutions. In short, don’t write off or cull the human race just yet.

The depth of financial shit this country is in is more than alarming. No point in blaming any one party, but I’m fucked as to how any party is going to get us out of it.
 
It is quite relevant that the UK's credit rating fell quite sharply under the Tory geniuses.

I'm sure various factors are to blame for this, but as with anyone else, a lower credit rating inevitably leads to higher borrowing costs.

I remember newspapers wanking on about our AAA credit rating and how important it was. Yet suddenly, when we fell to B+, or whatever shit rating it is now (I forget,) they made surprisingly little of it. Probably because we had a Tory government at the time. Had it happened under Labour's watch, we'd still be hearing about it in 2065.
