Each generation is more wealthy than the previous. And each generation says it has failed to do so. I think most people would be prepared to pay more tax if it meant better public services. I agree it has been the direct opposite under the Tories and they had to go. Do I trust Labour to improve public services? Not in a million years. They will piss it away like all of them do. There is nothing wrong in inheriting wealth and never has been. The capitalist system is far from perfect but it is far better than socialism or anything similar. The next five years will prove that unequivocally…They’d pay more than their fair share of tax if we had a greater distribution of wealth. As it stands, they quite clearly don’t as wealth itself earns more money than work does and so the disparity grows.
I’m a high rate tax payer and I’d gladly pay more if it meant better public services now and also not completely screwing over the next generation aside from those that can inherit wealth. That I’m able to do that for my children doesn’t make me feel happy, it makes me despise our generation for not making the overall quality of life for the next better. We’ve failed as a generation doing that.
I do wonder about you speaking about the two extremes too. Most people live in the middle, I guess it’s just some still either retain empathy or like to punch up or some are still quite happy punching down…
