The Labour Government

Technically, surely a lot are wealthy, if they're sitting on such valuable land?

But something has clearly gone wrong if farmland is so valuable, yet so economically unproductive.

If you were going to spend government money on improving the situation, do you really think removing IHT, making farmland the ultimate tax dodge, and driving up land value beyond it's farming value, was the right way to go in 1992?

Next you’ll be arguing why do nurses become nurses when they know the pay is shit. People farm because they love it.

That people use loopholes to their advantage is, and always will be, a game of cat and mouse. The rich (non farmers) will find another vehicle to put their money in and avoid tax.

Poor rich farmers , can only leave three million to the kids, then they pay only 20% inh tax on the rest whilst the rest of us have to pay 40%

Stop whinging ffs , the rich hate paying tax , barely going to a affect any of them , it is only 4% of the population

Aye, next you’ll be moaning about all your food being expensive/ imported (think of the environment) etc etc. Farmers aren’t cash rich, but feel free to find evidence they are.

And weren’t you thinking of selling your shares to avoid any changes in tax? Pot kettle and all that.

This is getting so many headlines but the reality is the tax it will raise is utterly irrelevant.

The amount that it will raise is worth around 3 days of annual national debt repayments.

People are talking as though it will help people to get more GP appointments and fix the NHS but it's completely laughable, it will do/change absolutely nothing.

They'll spend more on HS2 over the next few months then they will ever raise from inheritance tax on farmers.

It’s not irrelevant if you’re the one paying the tax is it?

What a load of nonsense. I'm surprised at that from you. That's absolutely nothing to do with the argument I was making.

If the "rich (non farmers)" find another vehicle, then that's good for people who want to farm, as it stops driving up the price of farmland, and taking it out of the hands of the people who want to farm. The likes of Kaleb Cooper might even be able to buy farmland, rather than being hired hands for people who just wanted to avoid tax.

But there are clearly other issues in the farming industry that create a situation where farms are so valuable, yet make so little money. As I said, if you had £1b to improve farming in this country, would cutting IHT for the wealthier farmers be your first idea?

Zero sympathy.

Not sure that having the protest led by an amalgamation of the architects of Brexit, Lloyd Weber, the Tory opposition who fucked over farming for 14 years and Jeremy ‘I didn’t only buy the farm to avoid IHT, I go shooting on it as well’, is quite the win they imagine.

One big tax avoidance con that the mega-rich have been exploiting for far too long.

Is it any wonder public services are struggling when this is the lengths the mega-rich will go to.

If the genuine farmers want to go after anything, it should be Brexit, that was what screwed them most.
