The Labour Government

For me, nobody should be making such important decisions based on rumours alone. Especially as a lot of those rumours around pensions in particular were nothing but scaremongering by certain media outlets. One clown at work cashed out his rather modest private pension earlier this year because his newspaper of choice told him that Reeves was coming after his pension. The reality is that a pension of his size was very unlikely to ever be affected and if he'd bothered to do his research the talk about tax-free lump sums - if they were to be implemented - were only going to affect those with a far higher pension pot than his but the dickhead went and spunked his whole tax-free lump sum on a brand new car and then bought an annuity with the rest.

Another point about that is, if that change had been implemented it wouldn't be instantly anyway so would have had time to make an informed decision.

I find the timing odd. Surely big earners with some wealth will put more in before the changes now which will cost the government money. I’m not sure why the needed to announce something that won’t be coming in for four years.
Many businesses use salary sacrifice as a perk to attract employees and for some it will be in their contracts, my contract for instance specifically states the company also pay in NI savings. Changing it overnight would not allow time for businesses to adjust in certain sectors.

Reeves is an unpleasant individual and gives as good as she gets - after delivering a disgrace of a Budget, and the shit show surrounding it, Reeves deserves everything coming her way.

Thank fuck for all the leaks as it would have been a whole lot worse. This is absolutely fine by comparison.

So my tax on the EV will double in 2028, time to get rid by then I think. Even worse on hybrids you get stung twice.
Most of the budget was a bit meh with not a lot to get either excited or depressed about. However the tax on EVs is a disgrace tbh. The extended freeze on personel allowances is also somewhat of a piss take especially to the low paid.

I agree that buying an EV was encouraged by the Government and people were incentivised to do so, but you must surely agree that all vehicles should pay road tax.

I like the change to ISAs although I will never be lucky enough to max out the 20k a year it makes sense to encourage stocks over cash ISAs, whilst allowing over 65s to use the full allowance for cash still.
Yeah, as a pensioner I'd have been gutted if I hadn't been allowed to save 20k a year in cash, tax free, every year. I might have had to sack the butler and decant my own port to make up for it.

Like most pensioners can save anything out of the state fucking pension

When the number of EV vehicles gets higher maybe but

They are supposed to be promoting them so its a backward step

Also all road tax doesn't go on improving roads

What message does it send that petrol duty is frozen, EV duty per mile is brought in and some diesel cars have lower car tax than electric ones. More electric cars mean more profit for the energy companies. Let them stump up the difference between car tax and fuel duty on petrol and diesel and the actual amount we spend on roads.

Really weird. I think you can get a government discount when buying an EV but now you also get a government bill for buying one. Mixed messaging.

Haha I get the point, but I thought the reason for them being allowed 20k in cash still is due to their age and maybe not having the years to ride the highs and lows of the stocks ISA.

Not keen on the limit to pensions via salary sacrifice either. Agree with your overall sentiment though.

But the minimum wage increase is gonna hit yer hard. The butler 'n scullery maids, not to mention the Master of the Back Passage, can barely make ends meet with the pittance yer paying them.
