The Labour Government

The markets like the budget it means borrowing is cheaper ? I think that must be good news
Was listening to an American economist about a month ago who said that the UK was more balanced than was first thought so was a surprise to me that the media went on an ‘Income Tax Rise’ frenzy.

Although the markets have taken the budget well, and it was a bit of a ‘meh’ when it comes to it, just watching a report by Beth Rigby and she’s made it sound like Reeves has completely fucked up.

Now onto the news review and it continues, but nobody has even talked about the state of our social services that has to be funded following years of neglect.

I’m guessing that these types of media are angry that they’ve not got the ammunition to hit Reeves, and the Labour government with.

Edit: Bloke just explained it a bit, Tory commentator hit the roof. Confirmed, they’re angry.

Ps.Only lasted 13 minutes, how anybody can watch that propaganda, I’ll never know.

I agree that 2031 seems along time off. But don't forget we are still in the period that the Tories froze the thresholds for and so not a single personal tax rise until 2028 is down to anything actively imposed by Labour.
Both main political parties have totally failed the UK public. They are incapable of modernising themselves, incapable of reforming our undemocratic political structures, lacking in leadership and strategic vision, totally unfit to embrace the new technlogy-led industrial revolution. I blame the Tories for most of this catastrophe. The time for action was 15 years ago but our outdated system of government is unable to move fast enough for the modern age. The tired old tribal debate between Left and Right is just a way of avoiding reality.

I understand your concerns but what never seems to be criticised is those that vote them in. We’ve had huge shocks around the globe that have had major impacts, and that has had an affect on all recent governments. How they handled it is up for debate but it is we who place our crosses and try to support the team that gets in.

Bottom line of today for me.

And no, I don't give a toss what their parents are like, and I won't be responding to demonising of them.
Ah yes. That must be the same Ruth Curtice who became CEO at the Resolution Foundation think tank with a salary of £150,000 after moving from a senior role at the Treasury. The Resolution Foundation employs 30 people with a total salary bill of £2m (works out at an average salary of about £70,000). Just one of thousands of people on the Westminster gravy train. Do you seriously believe all the propaganda produced by these quangos and lobby groups? How many children will be pushed into poverty by ten years of tax increases for everyone earning more than the huge sum of £12,500 a year?

The process is flawed which is why so many people do not vote. The system attracts career politicians. It is a myth that they all want to "improve the couuntry" and "work terribly hard." I have spent a lot of time with politicians in my career. Some of them are dedicated but so many are purely driven by self interest. The two main parties have both failed for decades.

Labour’s number 1 stated mission was:

1) Kickstart economic growth

to secure the highest sustained growth in the G7 – with good jobs and productivity growth in every part of the country making everyone, not just a few, better off.

Unless I missed something, in their 2nd budget there was absolutely nothing re growth? OBR forecast growth at 1-1.5%.

They are clueless

100% agree. FPTP and the 2 main party system has long since had its day. Part of the problem is what you often see on threads like this across the internet. Pure tribalism - other side bad, my side good.

And the impacts are stark. Votes are expected according to side loyalties and the parties dont need to be radical or think big in order to work for them.

Prior to the 2024 GE Electoral Reform did some research which underlines this:

“It is 45 years since the average constituency last changed hands. Incredibly, 247 seats have been held by the same party for 50 years or more. Of those, a shocking 111 seats have been held by the same party for 100 years or more.”

The gradual rise of the greens (and to some extent reform) might mean that come the next GE electoral reform will be the price that one of LAB or (however unlikely it seems now) CON needs to pay to be the majority party. I hope so as the country needs real change.

Some common sense. I think I am going mad sometimes when I listen to the two tribes. It seems obvious that we are still stuck in the days of empire with the House of Lords and all the fancy dress. Can’t they see what’s coming down the road. Most Civil Service jobs will be replaced by AI, most legal jobs, most generalist doctors like GPs will go as well as medicine becomes led by genetics. Where is the vision and leadership for a new Uk.

You are Alistair Campbell and I claim my commons subsidised pint:-)

I actually believe you shouldn't be able to use this blag of freezing things for years and then adding length to it.

The Tories froze it, Labour are continuing with it. We are all adults and are aware either of them could have changed this. Its in effect a tax increase on everyone done for the easily fooled.

Dishonest optics from both parties if we are being honest.
I think the only people easily fooled will be those who think that even if their income doesn't increase they'll pay more income tax. They'll be fooled by all those saying it's a tax increase.

Whether it's a good idea is another matter.

Apologies if I'm being thick but I'm not sure what point you're making Vic?
It was aimed at people who say immigration is depressing wages and we should get sick people to go out to work in the fields and care homes. (Not even healthy Brits fancy those jobs.)

No Irish immigration would have meant Britain would have fewer canals, fewer railways.

In your view. I could counter by saying wait until this Labour government bankrupts the country and we all suffer. Biggest taxes rises ever, and we're only 17 months in. Got away with it to an extent in this budget. The next one will be more penal for sure.
Countries don't bankrupt themselves.

How is that possible?

If you’re feckless and lazy today was a good day for you and you’ve got a few more good years coming your way.

For the rest of us suckers who work for a living, we tighten our belts and we see what Nigel and his mob do in 2029.

The feckless and lazy?

Read the book 'Britannia Unchained' to see what right wing politicians really think about the 'alarm clock brigade' like you.

That budget really did fuck all to help me as a 50yr old living on my own earning just under 30 grand.

the uber tax and income tax rise only things that will affect me by the look at it, the energy firm chnges being set to. start in. april not now when most electric and gas is used to heat homes does fuck all for anyone in reality.
Train fare freeze, big deal we stil lhve a fucked pricing system, and highest train prices around.

Rest of it helps some but all in all, makes little difference to my life and won't help me much.
