The Labour Government

Stupid amount of money to gain what exactly. Would love to see the cost / benefit assessment.

The country has far more pressing needs than a fast train
Given that it will be a premium service and the decimation of professional jobs by 2036 there will be nobody to travel on it

I’m confused. Assumed the poster was saying Labour have committed that amount today to complete the project

The true benefit of HS2 was in the second phase.... the Y links to Manchester and Leeds ... cancelled by the Tories ... leaving us with just an additional faster line to Birmingham

But the Conservatives dont do ''the North''

One Hundred and Three Billion Pounds for HS2.

Fuck off.
It's about time these kind of contracts were awarded on a fixed price basis with penalty clauses for late delivery. At the moment once they get the go ahead it becomes a massive cash cow and we're all paying through the nose for it.

Heidi Alexander definitely said that cancelling it now would be almoat the same cost as continuing.
Mothballing would make it more expensive and likely just leave it half-built for ever
We all know cost overruns and time dep will occur. Why throw good money after bad.

That money already paid is sunk.

The Country has more needing requirements for that amount of money

WTF

Fucking disgrace. Increasing production in the North Sea is far more preferable.But...

Yesterday, Labour MPs voted against UK oil and gas licences being granted in the North Sea.
INSANITY.

Fairly sure it’s not as simple as that. Takes years for any North Sea production increase to have any impact.

The reality is you wouldn't get any private company take the risk. The only model that operates OK like this is how they do it in places like Canada, where its a design, build and operate model with the funding coming from pensions funds. But they obviously expect a good return on investment so it wont necessarily make it cheap for the passengers or freight operators.

The problem was not the concept of HS2 but the mess they made of the planning due to the use of Schedule 17 and the arguments over the route being driven by NIMBYs and those who had a vested interest in land value near proposed stations.

All of this delayed the build and added in lots of cost which was then compounded by inflation.

If a private company wouldn't take the risk then I don't see why a bunch of politicians feel able to take the risk using taxpayer money especially as the goverment that signs off the expense is very unlikely to be around to see it through. The early railways were financed by private investment and they seemed to very well out of it. The government needs to be much more savvy when handing out these huge contracts with massive commitments to pay for decades. The new nuclear power station(s) are a good example with prices for electricity generated guaranteed for the operators regardless of what happens to prices in the future.
